    Bumpy tires again

Been a while since we had a good dirty tire thread. I just ordered up a set of Bridgestone 404/403s for my 250 XC-F. Despite all the new kids on the block, these still seem to be revered as the best by dirt rags. Anybody use them? I believe the front is referred to as the M59? Not sure about the rear. However, the whole name designation is changing for these tires. Still available, but under a new name going forward.

On a side note, I scored a map switch for the KTM for 30 bucks while I was there. Gives 3 maps, soft, stock and agro. Believe it or not, this 250 requires a soft map for technical woods duty. The motor is aggressive stock.

    Re: Bumpy tires again

The m59 is kind of the standard for NE woods up front. I NEVER understood this, as the side knobs rip off if you look at the tire wrong.
That golden phatty everyone rages about is just a tubby version of the 59. Same pattern, just bigger overall.

I've not run that Bridgestone rear. I have one I put screws in, I don't remember loving it or hating it in the woods, but I do remember taking it off for a trials tire.

I'm still stuck on the irc ve35 front, and then whatever's clever out back. My "race" wheels will probably sport a mt16 full time, as that thing is pretty damn good just about everywhere, and my "regular" wheels will get a Dunlop at81 next, then some hybrid thing that's still at clinton's, and then who knows what, probably another tt.

    Re: Bumpy tires again

Hmmm, Well, I guess I'll find out! I ride mostly MX, some sandy, and some totally mixed. I need a tire to be versatile and reasonably durable. I'm not trying to run really low pressures or anything. I hope the knobs don't chunk. I hate that.

    Re: Bumpy tires again

i'm a broken record and still love the Fatty front / Tractionator S/T rear combo. works great everywhere for me but i'm running low pressure most of the time. the sidewall is so stout on the Motoz i'm going back to a thinner tube, 1.5mil vs 3mil to save some weight.

yeah, Chip that Arena is ready when you are... actually, i have a new client on the Cape so i'll be jamming your direction semi-often. could drop off for you.

They may not be opened back up yet, they just closed on 2/22 for spring thaw. No much in the way of ground freezing in Rehoboth though...

Just a ride. I don't think there's anything I put on my calendar ahead of time.

I'd like to tell you to come ride tomorrow but we have Liam's 1st birthday party, you're welcome to come and have a few beers though.

I ended up ordering a set of MT-16's. I was planning on getting Maxxis EN's but my guy couldn't get the rear size I wanted. Odd. Anyway, I hear they wear quickly, but I'm probably too slow for that to apply.

    Re: Bumpy tires again

yup. neighbor bought a used race bike last season. front had bib mousse with two rim locks. goddamn couldn't get any good bites after the first few nips, like zero play. ended up going SAWZALLLL on that shit.

if we had longer irons might have gone better but we didn't want to fuck up the black rims too much. (i don't care, he does)

EDIT: btw, the front is off to the left out of picture frame. rears were cake althought comparing mounted tube+tire weights was interesting. my rear was WAY heavier than his... opposite was true after we were done. wish i brought the scale out.

    Re: Bumpy tires again

I just mounted a Goldentyre GT-216AA "Fatty", but I have no rides on it yet. On the rear, I have been alternating between a MotoZ Tractionator Enduro S/T, and a Pirelli MT43 trials copy. My 350 4-stroke does not seem to care which rear tire is mounted. It just hooks up. I also favor the (new?) Michelin S-12 XC rear, and the IRC VE35 front.

I have bib mousse envy! I think I want to make the transition but $$. I already have the rabaconda changer which is designed for 3 minute mousse changes. Ha, yeah, right. But I am getting faster with it every time I swap ice tires in/out.

hope you love the Fatty. i think it's amazing. i'll never go back.

do you notice a change in handling with the trials though? the tall Arena totally changed my bike. it even made my steering twitchy but to be fair, i was dialed for a standard 110/100 before swapping.

i don't know, man, seems like overkill unless you're riding cactus. that thing was a bitch to work with. the Bridgestone and IRC UHD tubes are no fucking joke, but i guess it comes back to sidewall construction on whatever tire you prefer.
