In NH, the state trails are open as long as there's a 'groomable' depth of snow - usually about 6" of hardpack. Private trails are at the discretion of the property owners...

I don't really put a helluva lot in my fronts, but I'm on a Raptor not a dirty-bike. I use just enough so my front end doesn't push...

My cove's been frozen since Thursday and as of this morning it had't thawed out. The rest of the lake was pretty much open though...

What are you guys running for ice machines? I usually set up my KDX for winter trail riding, but I might get some screws and knobs for my DR650, just to have a little fun...

I just use the Raptor. If I had a dirty-bike though, I'd be using it also...

Last year i rocked the Raptor 700, this year it's going to be a YFZ 450R.
The years before, I used to use a bike (YZ450 and a KTM 525exc) and I've found for me, the quad is a bit more fun for ice tracks

It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?

Save yourself a few bucks and get two boxes of 1000 each. But measure the height of your knobs first to determine which length you need. Getting some Slime may not be a bad idea either. And don't skimp on the screws, get real ice screws. It's been proven over & over that sheet metal screws pale in comparison in terms of traction...

When I was done with mine, I had about 1500 screws total and most of those were in the rear tires. I only put a few rows down the middle of the fronts. You'll wanna keep extra screws on hand because some will most likely pull out, especially with the torque of the Rappy...

I'm by no means an expert at this, last year was my first. This year, I aim to improve my set-up...

    Re: The countdown for ice!

In my youth, when my family lived on a lake, I studded up all of my bikes (CR's, Husky 410, XR600, etc. I even had my Rokon RT-II studded up!). Regular slotted-hex-washer head sheet metal screws will work fine, if the ice is soft. Once the ice gets really hard (temps in the 20's or lower) purpose made screws really shine. I used to buy 5/8" screws for the rear, if I had a used tire, and 3/4" if the tire was new. I ran 1/2" long screws in the front.
Some racers use tire wraps to get from the truck to the ice because the screws dull rather easily. They aslo use liners and screws that are in the 1"-1 1/2" range. I never got that serious about it.
I do miss ice riding, though. There is nothing quite like the feel of mile long, feet up power slides!

How much would it run to get a set of tires screwed?

You can buy a pre studded set from fredette racing products for around 5 hundred.

You could do your own using standard ice screws and save. The screws go for about $80/box of 1000...

As many tracks as you can dream up too.

Just remember to take care of your hosts.

The Ponds and lakes up by me are starting to freeze up real nice like.

Most dealers carry the ProGolds, that's what i'd use. Or Kold Kutters.

Not sure what tires your Rappy has, but the stocks ones will suck. There's not enough rubber on the knobs to stud and they will rip out. You want a fairly new set of tires and a hard compound with big block type knobs
