I have had a KTM 300, KDX 200, DR350, XR600, Husky 410, Cr 250, CR 500 and many others street registered and inspected in VT and MA.
I am currently working on another KDX200 and it should be ready for a MA street registration soon.
It just takes some $$ and effort.
KTM would be my choice. Owned lots of japanese dirty bikes. Won't go back unless something really sweet comes around. There is a reason most GNCC rallies are filled with orange and black colors.
They're fricken sweet moto's!
They should call Production Twins what it really is, Shitty McBikefest. Rules for Participation: If your bike runs lower laptimes than a lawnmower, you are not eligibile for Shitty McBikefest. -Darrell

Clough is a HUGE trail network, and very close to you. I've not seen anyone touch the KTMs out there. They don't seem bothered by the rocks, roots, etc. that slow the rest of us mortals down. If I wanted a woods/trails only bike I wouldn't be looking any farther than KTM.
That said, I love my KX125. It makes due in the trails and is way more fun jumping in pits and whatnot.
edit: Talked to one of the more impressive guys out there, his ride was a 250 2 smoke KTM that delivered power like a 4 stroke. sounded almost 4 stroke-ish as well, but he said it had a fun powerband if you used it, just no need on the tight stuff. Bitchin bike. Still small and light enough for the sigletrack, still 2 stroke. If I got a non-MX bike it'd be one of those.
