Dirt gear suggestions?

I'm want to get some riding gear (boots and pants).

Any rec's for Boots (brand/style you like or hate)?

Also, I was thinking about getting some riding pants that aren't the standard motocross style (i.e. tuck into the boot), I was looking at the freestyle type that fits over the boot. Any thoughts?

The local shops have almost nothing in stock, so once again I will probably be forced to buy on the net (I prefer to give money to local businesses but...)

Fox Racing pants & jerseys hold up well. Thor stuff, too. I like the HJC lids, but the light ones -- not the cheap, heavy ones.

I like the Thor stuff. As for boots, you can spend big, or get cheap closeouts. Sidi are prolly the best. I opted for a 35 dollar pair of Thor boots from DennisKirk. They do the job, but are not as luxurious as the high dollar stuff... They also leak merely looking at a puddle...

i seem to prefer Alpinestars boots, currently have a pair of the Vectors and love 'em, great fit, good flex, decent water protection. for pants/jersey used to be faithful to AXO but have been buying all Thor lately. good stuff.

for over the boot pants, im on my second pair of Thor Ride pants. pretty tough, clean up easy, breathe well, keep my boots dry. also just got a pair of Troy Lee Explorer pants that seem really nice. better belt than the newer Thor Ride, zipper pockets + flap, more breathe/stretch panels, grippy knees, etc.

i buy the pants that have solid legs but you could also go with the freestyle type you mention where there legs unzip to form shorts. if you're planning to do woods and MX, i feel the solid leg is better but thats just personal pref.

Alpinestars, Sidi or Gaerne for boots. Having said that... I have O'neal that I got on Proform a number of years ago. Work fine for me.

OK, not to turn this into a rant or anything, but I went into my local shop this afternoon to check out what they have. I've been in there twice before, both times I was ignored from when I walked in the door until I left. Today, they actually said "Hi". I told them I wanted to look at some motocross boots. They guy said "nope!" I assumed he was joking and headed to the mx area in the back of the store. They actually had a couple of boots on display more or less in my size. Enough so that I could determine reasonable fit/comfort. No other sizes / extra boxes hanging around. I also tried on some pants. Spent a solid 20 minutes in there, nobody said shit to me. On my way out, I walked past four employees, including the nope guy. Not another word. It's no wonder local shops are losing out to the 'net. End of rant!

I've been singing that same song on this site for years. Its mostly a regional thing; dealers in VT have very little in the way of competition, and so they can get away with that crap.

Fuck 'em all. Just buy your stuff on the internet.

Go to places like denis kirk or rocky mountain atv, to their closeout section. orlocally to brockton cycles.com. or new enough .com

try to find the most expensive top of the line stuff but at 50 to 75 %off. due to the fact that its last years model or a couple year old model


you can buy the cheap stuff but you get what you pay for.

Go for the good stuff at a discount.

especially with boots, usually they are more expensive because they have more features
fyi fox mx pants tend to run small, buy one size larger

just started riding dirt a few months ago so i was in your shoes. i bought the fox 180 pants and jersey. fox tracker offroad boots. after a few "get offs" i will say that the gear has done its job to my expectations anyway. i dont do motocross just trails stuff. but havnt noticed any torn seams on the pants. jersey is nice and light for the warm days and fits well. boots are boots i guess they fit well. never tried on the expensive stuff so i dont know how it compares. just be sure to find out if the stuff runs small or big. i know my fox boots i had to order one size big. and the pants seem to run a tad small in the waste too.

Roadside Marine is a lot better, especially for minor service stuff like tire changes (unfortunately for more major service they'll only work on the brands they sell).

And for Suzuki stuff, if you don't mind the drive, Cyclewise is great. They're just north of Middlebury on Rt 7. I'm planning to buy a V-Strom 650 in the not too distant future, and I'm getting it from them, not Land Air.

Nope, not Land Air. It was Roadside. I agree about the service stuff though. Dan has hooked me up with tire changes/inspections. He's a cool guy. When I needed my new tires put on, he squeezed me in at the end of the day on a friday. It was a hot day, so I brought him a sixxer. He really appreciated it and gave me a hookup on the install. Cool guy for sure.

Land Air (air?? wtf? they don't sell planes do they?) is also good at ignoring customers. I went in there once to check out some jackets. I asked if they would be going on sale over Labor Day (lots of places have l.d. sales)...the dude didn't even look up from his magazine, just grunted "no". Douche Bags!

I will give the track another twice over with the rake and switch to the bucket and firm up the jumps. Most are small , but i think i will have about 30 when I am done.
I will go riding Sunday afternoon if you are around, call your buddy and we should hook up.

Thanks for the Roadside tip. The search for gear has been slow, but I really dig the Klim Dakar pants. I have a lead on boots, but not 100% sure yet. I tried on some MSR ATV boots. Cheap, but comfy. I'm thinking about spluring on some Sidi Discovery boots. I have some Sidi road boots and they are pretty solid. Of course, I could put that $ into suspension upgrades...

I heard a funny story about you today. It involved you, your KTM and repeated flogging of a mud hole. Nice stuff.

I definitely want to check out your track. I rode past your place when the dirt was all piled up all over. I would be glad to help with shaping, raking etc. I'll be working all weekend, but if you're around this Friday, let's hit the dirt (track or trails, whatever!)

The track is totally rideable, we took out the doubles and just made either table tops or small 2 way jumps. It is just shy of 2 miles long not counting the woods sections and has a practice track called a paperclip. The paper clip is the most awsome berms I have ever ridden.
I just need to keep making the table tops bigger and therfore safer.

I hope the grass grows back fast for the hood, I have definatly altered the view. Of coarse I find it beautiful beyound words.
We had the steerer running for 12 hours straight yesterday and really pulled it together.
I saw Randy/ heard him way before I saw him, the end of his Big Gun fell off on the way home and it was even louder than usual. He may make it to Sundays CCCofVT ride in Johnson if he recovers from his hangover.
Hope to see you tommorrow, we can hit some trails for a quick ride.
