Same tim. He has 3 bikes. Yzf250, 250 husky, and had this 167 that he never rode.

Great guy. Glad you're getting it! Super nice bike and Tim takes care of his stuff. I guess Clinton takes care of his stuff too :p

just to clarify, it's a Walt Smith / "wallybean" / WB 165. different kit than the Uptite or Max Power 167.

Was told to buy an SV650 - Bought one
Was told to buy a DRZ400 - Bought one.
Was told to buy a fun KTM 2-smoke - Bought one

I figure you fuckers have spent about $10,000 of my money without even discussing the whole track day => racing thing.

Also, this site is indexed very well by google.

All, what besides the obvious (boots , helmet gloves) should be worn for trail riding. Can I use my track force field back and chest protector? Knee and elbow armor?

I'm a big fan of my compression jacket for the upper body. My buddies mostly wear these chintzy ass plastic roost guard things that look like they would shift out of the way if they ever hit anything. I feel unsafe without the full Iron Man getup. If its hot I'll just wear the jacket without a jersey over it.

    Re: New dirt rider advice

For the adult, don't skimp. Buy right, buy once. Ask me how I know.
For kids I imagine reality is probably somewhere in between as they outgrow this stuff so fast.
Boots; quality stuff with a ton of ankle protection that comes up well above the shin. See those serrated foot pegs? Those hurt like a mother when you smash your shin on one. Boots will be impossibly stiff when new and only a bit better when broken in. Will probably cost you 2x what your helmet costs.
Knee guards. I like the articulated knee protection. Some wear simpler padded ones. YMMV but I'm not excited about hyper extended or twisted knees.
I wear padded (football) undershorts with a tiny amount of padding on the hips. I think it helps.
Compression suit upper body armor is where it's at. Some just wear slip on elbow protection and a roost guard. A rock to the chest sounds unlikely but happens much more than you'd expect
Quality helmet. Something light-ish that breathes well as budget allows. I would not consider anything that does not have a removable/washable liner. I think most do.

Things you can go cheap on:
    Goggles; whatever is on clearance.
Pants and jersey; again, whatever is on clearance. I'm a fan of over the boot pants for "woods" riding. The MX guys seem to prefer in the boot style. I would not spend a ton on the outer wear as you are going to wreck it.
Lean towards light colors. Although if you're a larger person black is the only color available.. which sucks in the sun.
Gloves; whatever is on clearance. As a street/track rider you will be appalled at how flimsy dirt gloves are. But somehow they hold up. Abrasion resistance is not as much of an issue.

Camelback or similar hydration is pretty key. I tried a cheap knock off and it sucked. I can down 3L on trail in the summer no problems.

My latest thing is socks. I have problems with all this gear chafing. Turns out they thought of this. Most of the brands (ie Fox) have the insane socks that come up to your nutsack. I guess the idea is that you put those on, then put the knee guard on and fold the sock over the knee guard. Holds everything in place. I need this.

Neck protection. Some wear, most don't. I have a brace I really should be wearing, yet never have. You can go as simple as a foam neck roll. Again, few wear these.

I just read the whole thing, now I want a track toy.

    And a trailer.

    And a truck.

    FWIW, that's a 2003 tank, 2nd gen.

As far as gear, high end helmets and boots are nice. My current is Gearne SG10 boots and Shoei helmet. I would say def get knee protection, but I have not been wearing anything upper-body lately. Call it reckless, but it's too hot and I get fatigued too quick with a armor jacket on. I like Oakley and 100% goggles, it seems worth the money, and gloves are all personal preference.

I agree w' bubba on pants/jersey (just get clearance)...but for all the crashing I've done, I found hard armor on the joints have always helped - pressure jacket for elbows/shoulders/back...articulated knee guards (leatt ones)...alpinestar bionic hip/but armor...and I actually DON'T recommend straight dirt gloves - they're worse than gardening ones! I've used the lightest leather/knuckled street glove and been way happier. The thin mx ones tear apart when you land and the rocks hurt more without a dull layer of leather in between...plus when you smash trees with your knuckles, you want hard plastic. Most street gloves are pretty heavy tho...and you'll want perforated
