I bought a subscription to Dirt Ride magazine, and subsequently began getting catalogs from several different companies. A lot of them offer package deals with everything you need.

As a fellow dirt newb, I advise you get as much padding as you can possibly afford. You will crash, often, and it will be considerably less of a big deal if you're all padded.

I don't know why the woods guys think the neck protection isn't for them. I won't ride without it. The EVS model is light, simple, and part of my chest protector. For 150 bucks, it's VERY cheap insurance. Your neck is vulnerable in any 2 wheeled fall, and especially on uneven ground. I'd put it on the list.

You all have forgotten the most important thing:
    for after the ride.

if you decide to go with a 2 stroke, an extra spark plug and and socket is pretty valuable.

    I've got beer for you.
I have only gone once on the klx and had a blast.
The one thing I noticed was the 2 guys that got serious tickets and unregistered 2 smokes impounded.
Stree registered rides (dual sports) are much safer in MA.

Got my heart set on a CRF 250. R or X
I LOVE HONDAs. This will be # 7 Honda
Possibly more leaning towards and R but who knows.
    Reasons being:
The R is a little cheaper than the X
I am not planning to register the bike for the street so no need for the light kit. X is out of the equation. Although getting stuck in the woods w/no light would suck. That is where planning comes in.
I'll probably be doing more Trails along with a few MX course rides to learn jumps and the likes. Favors the X slightly more than the R.
Liking the starter idea. If I can find an X fairly cheap then I’ll jump on it.

Hmmmm looks like the X looks better in this scenario.

I made some of the same considerations, but decided on the R, twice. Just get something and come ride already!

Good. Maybe someday I'll spend the money to get a sticker and hand guards and join you in the woods. Never been in the woods.

Head & tail lights are good when it's dusty, or when you're on a trail with 2 way traffic. Not just for street registration or darkness. It'll give you that little extra 'hey I'm here' when some clown on a quad is coming at you & taking up the entire trail.

After being left in the dust while kickstarting my 98 WR400, I upgraded to a CRF250X with a button. Electric start in the woods is the only way to go.
It's a nice bike - go Gino go.

All this chatter is making me jones for another dirtbike....

http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/?...FYJx5Qod0Qz1ow I just bought the Bell Troy of York helmet and the AXO gray/yellow boots. I checked everywhere. No one comes close. Not even Ebay. Take the cheap shipping. 5 days from buying to my door. On the first the site will be updated with Decembers closeouts.

Re: Dirtbike gear. What Do I need?

I've been looking into dirt gear and is it just me or is a lot of it really just cheaper hockey gear? I may just wear my elbow pads and shin pads until I feel like spending the extra but seeing this thread pop up I figured I would ask.

    Example:
    Fox elbow pads...

    RBK elbow pads from hockey...

    Fox knee pads...

    RBK shin/knee pads from hockey...

MX gear IS cheaply made, but the hockey gear isn't as slim and will be harder to fit into boots and under jerseys. Try it, if it works, great, if not at least MX gear is CHEAP!

I had to get MX knee guards to fit in the boots. Speaking of boots don't go cheap. I had a pair of $100 Oneal's that I used until my buddy took a soil sample and mangled his ankle. Ordered up some A*Tech8's and the difference is huge.

Re: Dirtbike gear. What Do I need?

This is a good thread - I'm asking the same questions; I just picked up a DR-Z; my first dirt machine.

Anyone have dirt gear they're looking to part with?
