    I Want to get Dirty...

Alright. I took my first spin on a KTM this weekend. Don't know what it was, it was the first clutch-bike for a 10-year-old who is VERY experienced. Fun ride. Too fun. We already have a little PW50 waiting for my son (he'll be one on Sunday) and since I'm currently bikeless.... maybe I'll just save up and buy an adult dirtbike instead of another streetbike.... for now I can't have both....

So. Offer up some thoughts on which dirtbike to start with... something used for sure... I don't want crazy, kill-yourself powerband... but I want something fun and reliable and easy to find parts for when it breaks!

    I Want to get Dirty...

I'll drop Tony a line and see if he still has it... never know...

What's "proper riding gear" for a dirtbike going to cost? Not crazy high-end, but enough to stay protected and safe... I'd have to sell my current street gear to defray costs...

Yamaha TTR 125 L(bigger wheels) or Honda CRF 150. My wife has TTR with electric start and we both love it. The CRF is a little bigger, but that depends on your size. Gear , $100 helmet, $100 boots,$50 pads for elbows and knees.

well, kevin, I'm about 5'6" and usually weigh in at about 150-lb. Not particular skinny, not particular fat either! I'm still not even sure I'm going to make the switch.... I might just leave the money in the bank and be bikeless for a few years, until we build our addition.

I suggest considering a small dual-sport. Perfect for your area, where there are really no legal off-road riding areas but plenty of challenging Class IV roads.

    I Want to get Dirty...

Chr1s, I was thinking the same thing. There are a fair amount of dirt trails out in Wardsboro (I believe), I'd have to trailer or keep my bike at a friends' place. A dual-sport may be a bit more usable with less effort. Suggestions are... ?

While you could likely get a dirtbike plated easily enough in VT, a factory DOT-spec dual-sport negates having to do anything but add fuel. The Kawasaki KLX250S is the lastest, most modern small-bore dual-sport. That's the one I'd look at.
