    Best Dirty Bike Stand?

    Simple question...

My KDX has a kickstand but that makes it lean over pretty far in the garage and thus takes up more room. Also, it would likely be easier to work on with a stand.

    What's the hot setup?

I've seen a lot of those step-lift stands be cheap and wobbly as fuck, I assume a rigid stand you just muscle the bike onto is better, more secure, etc?

Anyone have one they like the most? Hole for oil drain and such is probably a desirable feature too.

    Thanks.

Buy the one I'm selling. Just toss the bike on it. Hole in the center for draining oil. Also use it as a step when putting the bike into the back of a truck.

One of each. I use the wobbly one way more than the OG style.

The $25 step up HF stand works pretty good, after a couple quick mods and greasing all the pivot points.

I made a couple stands out of 3/4" ply and put castors on them. It makes moving the bikes in the garage super easy and I can stack them in tight. I stole the idea from someone (Kitt) who used milk crates with plywood and castors.

    Re: Best Dirty Bike Stand?

I just grabbed one of these on sale at Cyclegear for $35. Seems to do okay for lifting the bike up for wheel swaps, etc. I change the oil on the kickstand. To just keep the bike sitting more upright in the garage, I put a block of wood under the kickstand.

    Re: Best Dirty Bike Stand?

Most complain the step ones are wobbly and unstable because they buy the cheap shitty ones.
I'm guilty of doing the same, then I bought an MSR HP step up stand and its by far the most stable stand I have seen or used. There's no hole for a drain plug, but the thing is so solid, you just favor the front of the bike with the stand, and you can still access everything needed

HF wobbly stand does the deed for me. Lifts either the dirty bike or the 300-something-pound DRZ with ease.

    Re: Best Dirty Bike Stand?

Copied from Thumpertalk regarding the HF step-lift stand. Harbor Freight MX stand 50% off - Page 2 - General Dirt Bike Discussion - ThumperTalk
I also recommend greasing all the pivot points, and some in the inside of the larger upper tubing to help it slide nicely.
Just look up the mod on YouTube and you will never bend your lift pedal or worry about collapse again. These mods literally take about 5 minutes and turn this $15 stand into a usable workhorse:

    1. Grind bottom of bar underneath footpad to a 30 degree angle. The bar is slightly too long, so in stock form it hits the ground before the cam action can lock the stand in the up position. Grind until you have a small amount of ground clearance.

    2. Bend the footpad level with the ground in locked position. Once done, the footpad will stay that way forever.

    3. Drill a small hole in the edge of the landing and attach the pin chain there. It will never touch the ground again and you won't lose it. It will be easy to reach to pin the stand, which you should do anyway on all jack stands that lock with cam action.

    4. You MAY need to slightly widen the hole for the lock pin once you adjust the bar to a length where the stand locks.

If you have the money, buy the best you can get. But this stand works just fine if you mod it.

    Re: Best Dirty Bike Stand?

Seems like more dudes use the wobbly ones than i would've figured. I guess I'm up for that, as long as it's not too, well, wobbly. That MSR is a bit steep at 115 bucks. Then again, the HF thing looks like a POS, even with mods. Idk.

James I'd take yours but i'm a lazy shit and am not gonna drive down there and back for a 10 dollar stand... haha

    Hmmm....

    Re: Best Dirty Bike Stand?

I had one similar to that. It was garbage. The tray warps too easy and the lift part itself was unstable. The kick mechanism was ok but it wasn't smooth. Certainly would not recommend.

I do have one of these
    https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p...ble-Lift-Stand

It's more money but its stable. It's what I used for the supermoto. To get the bike down, instead of kicking the lever up like in the stand you posted you step on a pedal with this one. Very good stand.

    Re: Best Dirty Bike Stand?

I've knocked both bikes off the HF stand at least once now. But wtf, it's a dirt bike and I'm a clumsy fuck; par for the course.

But really, I think you're just overthinking the problem.

I hate the wobbly ones. I use one of the cycle gear trackmaster ones. Use it under my dirt bikes and supermoto without issue

i agree. grab this for $47 shipped then keep an eye out for a good used lift stand. the standard style aluminum stands are easier to pack for ride days, flip it over and load the inside with more shit.

This particular variant doesn't seem to be on Amazon any more but this is the stand that I use. I'm sure there are nearly identical versions available if I actually bothered to look. It was $47ish at the time and other than greasing the two slides, it's required no modifications and has held up fine for me.

    edit:

I found another one on Amazon but it costs more than the one above when it was available.

It's 3/4" plywood that's glued and screwed. The box will hold a lot more weight than the castors.
