My rim strip is covered bu duct tape. them shitty little rubber straps can shift, and expose your tube to spoke ends. Rim strip+tape=chippy approved.

Duct tape is fine. It stays in place. A rim strip moves around and can be a real PITA when trying to get the valve stem through the hole in the rim.

I'm gonna do duct tape from now on. I just threw a $35 tube into the trash because a spoke got to it. I cried a little.

    Thanks for the tip!

I'd rather use 2 layers of duct tape than a rim strip that moves. I wish I could get the thick heat shrink that the newer KTM's come with stock. That stuff is the balls.

    Re: Dirty bike tire changes

I suck at this. Tubes are a horrible idea. Rim locks suck. The tires are stiff as Cheney after a bucket full of viagra. I thought my road tires were a bitch.

What a pain in the ass.

I got the old tire off, cleaned the crap out of the wheel (it was nasty). I got one bead on, got the rim lock in and the tube in. But there is nophuckingway I am ever going to get the stem back through the wheel. Ever.

    Great fun. Just sooper.

    Re: Dirty bike tire changes

    You're fucking telling me!

Seems best to make sure you line up the valve stem PERFECT-FUCKING-LY before putting the rest of the tube in. Otherwise threading the stem is a real bitch. Bubba style fingers don't fit between the wheel and the outside bead. So no dice repositioning it except to pull the whole thing apart and try again.

Edit: It does NOT just pop in like in that video someone posted. That dude must be mounting bicycle tires or some shit. Cheater!

Then once I got that squared away and the 2nd bead over the first bead wouldn't set near the rim lock. I guess you tighten the rim lock last? Even once I loosened it with the tire under pressure it would not seat. No reassuring pop like street tires. I finally broke what part of the bead had set, re-lubed the snot out of it, added ~20 PSI, and then the thing very slowly set. At least I hope it set.

Tire is mounted. Wheel is back on the bike. Looks like the axle never once saw grease. It was a real mother just tapping that out.

Maybe I'll try the front next week..

These D606 dual sport tires make my sport-touring hides on the V-Strom look like play-doh.

    Re: Dirty bike tire changes

Bring the front inside overnight, leave the wheel and the new tire next to something warm for a whole before you try this again. Lil chip trick. Warm flexi rubber is easier.
I the summer time, I just leave it I the sun for a while before I mess with 'em.

I did the front this weekend. Holy smokes it was easy. 400x easier than the rear. No rim lock to screw with. And the tire practically jumped onto the rim, found the dish of the wheel with barely a nudge, and the bead set just fine once the pump got to like 10-12 PSI. Easy peasy.

    Re: Dirty bike tire changes

Found this thread looking for something else.

Bill G introduced me to these Motion Pro spoons that have box-end wrenches on the handles. Had the fortune of trying watching someone else try them out trailside recently. They definitely kick ass. The box end wrenches are perfect, one less tool to cary. And the spoons are pretty great too. They have a small lip on the end of them that positions the spoon right on the edge of the rim, thus reducing the chance of pinching the tube as you lever the tire on. Whicked light too.

Couple different sizes for your application.

i heart my MotionPro spoons as well... they aren't Pro or box-end though, just standard 10" loop end x3. paired with a Tusk tire stand it makes the work... uh, enjoyable (?)

The small lip is the key... That and they are short enough to easily tuck under the brake rotor to hold it in place.

    Re: Dirty bike tire changes

I've only done one set for my DR, but I used the Motion Pro set Bubba posted above. I ended up bending the scooped end of the big one while doing the rear.
I also have a bead buddy, and it seemed to work well.

    Re: Dirty bike tire changes

Love the Motion Pro combo irons and the bead buddy. I've done enough tires now that it has become simple. I don't have a stand, I just put an old tire on the floor and work on my knees (knees help). All the other tricks mentioned here make a difference...lube, warm tire, small bites, drop center, patience. Trick I use for getting the valve stem in is to put a tire iron in the other side (the bead that's on the rim) right where the stem is, and lever the tire out as if you were going to remove it. This gives you lots of room to manipulate the stem into the hole.

Epic fail for me today. What a pain in the ass. After spending an hour and a half on replacing a tube, turns out I tore the new tube putting it in.

I'm bringing you my ice tires. If you put them on in three minutes like Fredette, I'm going to take up knitting.
