Had a great time. Saturday's VT loop was a little tamer than I remember, if that helps encourage people to try it out. Though we skipped some of the hero sections that day. I did one part solo and honestly it didn't seem too much harder from the main parts. Sunday had some good gnarly stuff. Almost all of the harder stuff could be shortcutted or skipped. Very jealous of the property owners who have some amazing single track loops.

I was getting pretty annoyed for the first third of Sunday, as it was one long grease-rut. That's my kryptonite. I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. Front pushes all over. Tried more throttle, tried staying loose, tried not being loose, standing, sitting, you name it.
I did both days as well. I found Saturday to be very easy, nice and fast/flowy....a big change from the usual NE roots and rocks. I enjoyed it. didnt crash once, haha!
Sunday was pretty brutal for me. That mud was so greasy, my brand new tires were filled and looking like slicks. I was all over the place too, especially my front. Not sure there was anything to do differently, it was just brutal. Everyone I saw was struggling and complaining about the same thing. If there is a trick I'd really like to know, because that stuff was killing me.

Re: Let's get dirty...check here for rides.

Pretty sure I posted about tubes in another thread, but I just saw the empty box this morning and noticed it was missing the word 'Ultra' before 'Heavy Duty'. Apparently the boxes look basically identical so I may have bought at least a couple MSR HD tubes instead of UHD.

Fixed a fork seal with a seal mate, and noticed the other side that I fixed at the beginning of the season is leaking again. After all the mud, this isn't a surprise. Anyone want to dispute the theory that fork seals typically don't wear out, and that it's really just dirt and need a cleaning?

RE: actual topic title, there's another NETRA turkey run in western MA this Sunday, and the weekend after JDay has a Sprint Enduro on the Saturday, and a race on Sunday at Crow Hill. Hoping to make it to at least one of the 3.

Ya I was talking with a few other people and we weren't the only ones. I noticed if you can keep the tire rotation speed up, it'll help clear the mudpack. Go slow and it'll stay packed. Any opportunity you can, get everything spinning. And there's definitely truth to staying on the gas. Roll off the gas and the front end dive/engine braking weights the front and causes squirm. Granted, maybe I'm not the guy to be taking advice from

It took me forever to get all the mud off the bike sunday night.

Holding on for a couple of weeks seems perfectly reasonable to me.

How beginner-friendly are the Jdays? I'd really like to try one. Ideally on the KTM, because it's got better hand guards and bash plates, but at this rate that thing is never going to run again so I'd have to do it on the Honda.

Depends on sprint enduro or GP
The terrain is similar between the two...sometimes sections are identical.

JDAY sprint enduro, very beginner friendly, as you run your sections on your own. Line up single file and the starter person tells you to go one at a time a minute or so apart. Get out of the way when fast dudes are trying to get by in the single track, as they will catch you but it's no big deal unless you are really worried about your own times.

JDAY GP races are started with dead engine, forty or so dudes in a line, and about four waves of forty...so unless you are in the last wave (unlikely), even if you play it safe by going into the first turn last on purpose, in about two more minutes the wave behind you is going to swarm you like angry human hornets. You WILL be lapped and passed many, many times at race pace during a hellaciously grueling thirty minute moto. It's motocross in the woods. Fun as hell, too!

Everyone has their first race sometime, but if you are unsure, I'd try a sprint first...same terrain without as much potential for knobby marks across your back (LOL)

Thanks for the reply! If the Sprint Enduros are easier, I'd start with those. I bought the Honda from a guy who bought it from a guy who did JDays on it. It has aftermarket radiators and beefy footpegs, but right now the suspension setup is MX. I don't think that would matter much, as I'm not fast enough to notice, but I would be concerned running the Honda because a) still having stock levers b) having cheap, plastic Acerbis handguards and c) having a cheap, plastic Acerbis engine plate.

It's counterintuitive but riding slowly will make a stiff suspension seem even worse. I've followed enough people in the wood on bikes set up for MX and you can watch them bounce off rocks and roots instead of riding smoothly over them. The less experienced riders tend to lose confidence in their abilities and end up fatigued relatively early in the riding session.

Yeah, I know all about this (bolding mine). That's been the single hardest thing I've learned about riding off-road.. the slower you go, the harder it is. The bike's suspension doesn't work because you become the suspension. And it's hard as hell on your body. The faster you go, the easier it is... which is why I have such a tough fucking time

Re: Let's get dirty...check here for rides.

When you say it's 'setup' for MX, do you mean clickers, or has it been revalved and/or resprung? You can probably tone it down quite a bit before an event.

Plastic skidplate probably won't be a big deal. I haven't seen much for big case hits. I've been running the factory plastic guard on my WR and it's been crash tested quite a bit. There's a good chance the levers will bend in to a u-shape in a dirt fall so that won't really be the end of the world. Lack of finger protection might make me a bit nervous but pretty sure there's quite a few out there who don't bother with full guards.

I wouldn't go into the woods without an aluminum plate, rad guards, and a good set of hand / lever guards.
    But then I suck.

    I wouldn't either.
My next event is the BTR enduro. I miss the rocktoberfast 10/1 due to travel.

I think you're right. If I was a good rider and wouldn't fall off 11ty billion times a mile, I'd rock it with plastic. But I can't, so I won't.

Let me see. I've literally just gotten the KTM to run (and idle!), but the lights don't work and some other stuff doesn't work so I'm chasing that down...
