    This seems fitting enough.

Completely agree. I wouldn't even consider riding without my boots (tech8's, I highly recommend them..)
Watched a kid tip over in a pit about 5mph with sneakers, he left on the back of a wheeler with bone sticking out of the skin on his ankle. Fuck that.

Are the knee guards for falling, rocks that get thrown, or brush? Or all of the above? I have some touring pants with built in knee guards I will use, I think I will tape around my leg too to make sure they stay put.

So I'm guessing the MX boot keeps your ankle from moving and sends the twist to your knees?

Like Chip said, mostly falling but really all of the above. I've been speared in the leg by large dead branch on the ground while at speed. It caught me right in the overlap between my boots and knee pad and nearly took me off the bike. The only damage done was to my riding pants which had a big hole in them from the impact. It would have been a pretty ugly wound without the pads.

Re: Going on my first dirty ride this weekend!

"speared" is a good word, like "jousted". that's always fun... if you're wearing plastic.

carsick, yes and no. the bummer is you can get nasty twist from the weight of the boot in the wrong fall... but for regular riding, you'd be amazed what your feet get assaulted by.

OP, have fun! dirt riding rules.

They transfer some energy to your leg but they are no where near as ridged as a ski boot. Since you aren't attached to skis and your legs are free to move, risk to your knees is inconsequential compared to the protection they offer.

The most important thing they do is protect your feet and ankle from bending in the wrong direction.

I've been on various dirt bikes including RM125's, CR125 and a KX 250, old school stuff and it's been greater than 10 years since the last time. I hope it's like riding a bicycle.

    You'll have a blast.

Fortunately no legs were speared or feet folded in half during today's adventure. I am glad that I waited until after riding to read this thread lol I would've thought no one would return with legs based on the horror stories.

As soon as I can afford it! It was fun, but definitely second in priority behind road racing. Now I need to decide on the bike.

Re: Going on my first dirty ride this weekend!

Trails, very wet trails. It rained a lot last week apparently. I was in over the top of my (work) boots a few times, with feet on the pegs. We almost drowned the bike Nuss was on.

I havent gone through the video yet, anyone have a recommendation for editing software?

holy chit!!! that's actually an AWD dirtybike?? was it awesome???

where was this - ? I'm guessing RI - so Pachaug?

and looks like you guys had fun! the dr looks like it's very appropriately suited for where you guys were riding...it has broad, 4t power, has enough get up & go, 6 speed tranny makes it sufficient for street, and the plush woodsy suspension great in the NE trails...nice dude

so when are you buying a bike??

that dt rocks...my 2nd dirty was a '79 KD125, and they can be just as much fun (knowing their limits)

Re: Going on my first dirty ride this weekend!

Ya, the Christini is pretty cool. The owner seems to be enjoying it a lot, says it is great for mud/wet trails. I'm honestly not even sure where we were, I believe we ended up somewhere in/near Granville MA. We started from Northern CT and ended up in MA before we left the road, I was just giggling in my helmet the whole time not really paying attention to where we were going.

I need one or two more paychecks for recovery from the track season before I make serious moves on a dirty bike.

I'm somewhat torn between a true dual sport and a 2t plated woods bike. It was really nice being able to ride 40 minutes out to the trails last weekend. It would also be nice to have the option to ride to work, or even to ride from ~Providence to ~Hartford to meet up with friends. Having never ridden a true woods bike, I dont fully understand the trade-offs between the two. How would my experience differ on something like the DR350 vs a woods bike? What about 2t vs 4t? Given my lack of riding buddies in RI and the seeming lack of riding spots, I will probably end up doing hare scrambles and such just to have somewhere to ride.
