    Got my first dirtycycle!

But I am in Florida. I just wanted to share since I have been coming to this forum for years now and wasn't going to change once I moved.

I picked up an 2003 YZ250 which some might say is to big of a bike for a newer dirt rider but I already took it to a track and yes it is a powerful beast I didn't do to bad. On my last lap I decided to try a step up double but i hesitated and didnt have the traction i needed due to it raining so the rear hit the lip of the landing and pretty much bounced around and fell on my face and broke my already cracked throttle tube.

I bought the bike for $1300 and he gave me a work stand, loading ramp, 5 gallon gas tank, two pairs of riding pants, a jersey, pair of pretty used fly boots and some renthal stickers haha. It needed new bars, grips and levers because someone test drove it and crashed it. I went to a local cycle gear store and bought what it needed and fixed it the day before I went to the track.

After the track it needed a new throttle tube, air filter and front wheel bearings. I put the wheel bearings in today, doing the air filter, oil change, wash and possibly taking plastics off to get a better look at the bike. It will need a new chain and possibly sprockets soon and then looking into getting a trailer and hitch for my Acura CL.

I really think this was a good purchase compared to the crappy CRF450 i had bought 3 years ago. I am just wondering if you fine people can point me in the direction of a good dirt forum. I know of thumpertalk and haven't been there in forever but would also like to know of another one or two. Thanks everyone!

New plastics and graphics will happen eventually and when I get better. Until then these will get thrashed. When I changed out the oil I noticed small metal specs. There wasn't a lot but more than i have seen in any other change i have done. Most of my bike had a magnetic drain plug I think so maybe thats why.

New plastics and graphics? That thing looks sweet as is! If you want to see a bike in need of plastics and graphics look up my WReck.

BTW, I started on a 250 2S also, lug it and it'll stay mellow while you sort things out.

    Re: Got my first dirtycycle!

I am in Tampa Clinton, a couple tracks within 40 minutes and two big trail places 1-2 hours away.

The pictures do the plastics and graphics more justice then they are worth. The rear fender is zip tied together under the seat, parts of the graphics are peeling or peeled off and discolored. And they will only get worse with my crazy ass riding it haha. When the time comes I may go for a White plastic kit with white, red and black graphics if i can find them.

It's not like I'm just starting out because I road my DRZ400SM A LOT on road and trails but obviously they are two different beasts.

    Re: Got my first dirtycycle!

Went to some trails today which were awesome and got way more comfortable on my bike, then tragedy happened. We decided to to turn around from where we were and head back to the trailer and truck after exhaustion and dehydration were hitting each of us four. Somebody stalled and had to catch his breath so I shut my bike off. We finally start bac up and I let the other three take off and I rev the throttle and the engine seized up.

I now have to find a repair manual pdf or paper and then dig into the motor and find out what is messed up. Kick start lever wont move and if i put it into gear but hold clutch in the rear wheel will still drag and not move. I have never dealt with a seized motor before. Hopefully it is just piston and rings with cylinder still good, I can be optimistic right?

Ah man. Sorry to hear the bad news... good news is 2st rebuilds are WAY cheaper than 4st. Get that thing sorted and she'll last you a while.

Sounds like a cold sieze, hopefully. You're going to need to drain the coolant and then pop the head and cylinder off to see what's going on in there. Piston/rings, and a repaired/replated cylinder should be less than $400 worst case scenario.

    Re: Got my first dirtycycle!

Nah, can't be a cold seize as he'd been riding for a while. Also, modern 2 strokes don't really cold seize. The cast pistons and cylinders expand at similar enough rates now that it's not an issue. (maybe with certain forged pistons, but even still, rare)

I'm guessing the opposite, the bike was overheating for some reason and when he shut it off the parts finished welding themselves together. Either way it's the same thing. Do as Kurlon suggested.

This may have been a sign of something getting ready to go.What are u running for a fuel mix ratio? Maybe its too lean?

    Re: Got my first dirtycycle!

Well, that would only have come from the gears, as the engine oil is in the fuel. I hat to say this, but I suspect this to be a crank seizure, which is more work and money. A lot of top end seizures will release enough to at least push the kick starter over. Not all though, so there's hope.

Buying a used 2 stroke is a bit of a gamble. Unless you can get accurate hour data, you really are just taking your chances. For this reason I always build in to my purchase price the cost of at least a top end, and I do that immediately. Then I know what I'm starting out with...

Yeah, I'm going to have to get a manual before I start digging as I am unfamiliar with 2 strokes. I also have to find a good place to tear it down or watch the weather carefully so if I have to take it apart outside it wont be windy or rainy. I live in florida in military dorms but there is a hobby shop to work on stuff. once i get the manual I'll probably head there.

    Re: Got my first dirtycycle!

It's disturbing how simple the top end is on a two stroke. Some nuts on the top free the head, between that and popping the exhaust off you'll be able get an initial look inside to see what's going on. The next step in the teardown is to undo the power valve linkage on the side of the cylinder under that lil cover, pull the carb, then undo the nuts around the base. Yoink and away and you'll be able to look the piston over, as well as see the crank. Any further and you should undo whatever is left tying the motor to the frame and get it on a bench.

If you've worked on a four stroke single you'll be giddy with the simplicity of these things.

    Re: Got my first dirtycycle!

yeah, just like having a manual and just found pdf of the yamaha manual so i'll be good to go soon enough. I have never dealt with a powervalve and it's linkage haha. This motor looks a hell of a lot simpler to get out from the frame than the crf450 i had.

I'll be posting pictures and shiz when I get to that point. Heres to hoping buying a 2 stroke was a smart idea for thinking it would be cheaper if something let go.

    crank bearing?

if you want to see how simple the 2t disassembly is, check this out on rockymountain atv:

I'm a little burned from my own 2-smoke project...so I'll be the one sour opinion in the crowd: price out the rebuild after diagnosing the problem. Then decide if it's worth it...it might not be worth it

you're going to need $140 in crank removal/case splitting/flywheel pulling tools in addition to all the top and lower end gaskets/seals, crank bearings, new top end, and possibly transmission bearings for good measure.

Bah, I never used a crank removal tool or case splitter. I gots me a rubber mallet.

Unlike your Suzuki, Yamaha machines are partsbin devotees, two generations of motor and as long as you stay in the same generation you can pretty much swap from any to any. First gen is 89 to 98, with the 97 and 98 having slightly tweaked reed block mounts. Second gen is 99 to current. HUGE availability of used parts for these rigs.

Beware the used motor. Take yours apart FIRST. Only by a used motor if your cases are bad or something. You would need to rebuild the used one as well. They are for sale because they are smoked. Unless you know the seller and the history of the motor, forge ahead fixing yours.

This is probably what i should do, but it would be a while before i could really afford all the parts and grow the testicals to do the rebuild. I know if i really took my time I could do it, I just would have to find a place calm enough for me to work in. It would be nice to continue to build my tool collection and mechanical abilities. Would be awesome to find a donor motor to take apart and put back together first.

Tomorrow after i get out of work i will hopefully be removing the top end and seeing bad piston and ring and a good cylinder.

    Re: Got my first dirtycycle!

bummer on the issues but you've got the perfect case to learn from. 2 stroke motors are super easy to work on and relatively cheap to fix. like these guys said, just read, take your time and use the right tools. once it's back together and running... learn to jet and keep the cooling system fresh. i've run dirt bikes in Florida heat/sand, they like preventive maintenance for sure.

post pics after you pull the cylinder and head.
