DO YOU KNOW OF THIS PLACE??

While street riding with some freinds one guy took us to a place in Franklin, MA at the YMCA and showed me a "legal" dirt bike only riding place.

It is just off 140 looks like a nice area and the sign says "dawn to dusk" and Dirt bikes only!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Anyone been there??

Not sure, was there a big water tower tank looking thing right there, just after you cross under some powerlines?

If so, thats one of the legal state forest riding areas. (franklin state forest) you can ride in, yes its 2 wheel only as some of the trails are true single track.
You need either a yellow mass atv plate or a street legal plate.

its open may 31st to the end of november.

The power lines right next to it are fun too but I'm not sure they are 100% legal.

Sean yes that was the place. My buddy has a dual sport so it is registered for the street.

Now can anyone tell me how to register a dirtbike?
Can this be done over the internet?
I have two Honda dirtbikes an older XR250 and a new CRFX 250 can I use one plate for each bike?

    From what I have heard.

You have to do everything to the bike to make it street legal
most of it can be done with a baja designs kit

    hi low beam head light
tail light with front and rear brake illumination
    turn signals
    horn
    chain guard
    dot knobbie tires

once you have done all that
you go to a dealership or motorcycle inspection place that will give you a letter on their company letterhead stating that you have met all the requirements to be street legal. take that to your insurance company along with the certificate of origin. they will make out an rmv 1 form to take to the registry.
you apply for a title and register the bike probably have to pay sales tax so you'll need the bill of sale from when you bought the bike.
then take all that and go back to the delaer for an inspection sticker.

I have not had to do this but have heard that others have.

The easier thing to do is sell it to a buddy in NH for $1 (on paper) have him register and title it in NH then sell it back to you for $1 once he gets the title. then you can register it in MA with out all the bull.

That all sounds like a lot of bullshit and a pain in the ass.

What I really meant is can someone tell me how to get an off road plate (you know the yellow plates) and couldn't I use that for both the new Honda and the old Honda.

I assume I would need an off road plate from NH as well if I want to ride near my parents at Clough State Park?

Oh, why didn't you say so.

Go to the place where you register a boat, not the regular RMV

show proof of sales tax, or pay it there then give them $30 if you live in mass for a yellow plate its good for 2 years.

as for NH its a sticker and you can get it at most bike dealerships I think its roughly $60 give or take per year for a non NH resident, andI think you beed to register them seperatly as you will get a registration paper that you need to keep with you just like your car and it has your vin #on it.

Getting it street plated opens up alot of riding, also great for resale value. I didn't do any mods to mine for the street, but also don't ride it around town. Enduros and organized offroad events, mostly for me.

this is kinda OT, but a few days ago while walking to the post office, I saw a state cop in Central Sq (Cambridge, MIT area) pull over a dude on a dual sport. at quick glance it looked street legal and figured he was getting nailed for speeding or something. when I got back, there was a flat-bed, and the bike was about to get towed. I asked the guy what was going on. his response "no chain guard"

    I *heart* police.

Thanks for this anecdote. I need to get my chain guard back on. I took it off while cleaning and I lost some of the screws. It would be quite the suck for your bike to get towed.

whaaaaat?!?!?! that is such major league bullshitt. only a friggin state cop would know that, have to give him credit for being able to retain that information, though. but, again, major bullshitt. a dealer told me that they expect a crackdown on bikes that are not technically street legal, even if they have stickers and registrations. in other words, even if your bike has a reg now, it could be no good in the future. i don't know if i believe that, but it's a scary thought.

I've ridden there once. I plan to go back sometime this year as well as Wrentham an F. Gilbert. It says bikes only but that doesn't stop the ATVs from going there, turning all the single track to highways and any little puddle into a huge mud pit. From what I recall it is less rocky than Wrentham.

You need to contact the Environmental Police for the yellow off-road plate, same outfit that licenses boats, etc.

Kevin, thanks for the info. I had found the site this afternoon after I posted the question. Printed all the forms I needed paid my sales tax etc. Will fill out the form for the plate and registration. I am registering the older Honda 1982 XR250 and plan on using the plate for both bikes. I'm not sure I can plate the CRF250X

    Tom,
I ride there all the time, just got back form givng hessobeatdown and Nazzo a lesson in pain.....those guys will sleep good tonight.... Call me if you want to go some time. I can get away during the day for a few good miles. You will need either an ATV plate or a street reg. I'll show you the good loops.

Tom you can put that card in a zip lock bag and wrap it around the foam cross bar pad then put the cover back on the pad, assuming you have a foam cross bar pad. Although the couple times we had been stopped by ELE they didn't ask for the actual reg just wanted to see a valid plate on the bikes, but they can ask to see the card as well.

Well we went there today Saturday 8th July 2006....made me feel old man, I dont get much time on the dirtbike anymore and I let an employee take the old thumper and I was on the new CRFX 250. Too big and too much power for me but we had fun just the same. The trails in the forest were a little messy from so m uch rain. We ended up getting on the power lines instead.....25 miles was enough for today fro me. I flipped that poor bike over going up a STEAP grade and nearly ripped the rear fender off her.
