What do I need to look for in pants, shirts, knee and elbow pads? Mainly for Trails/woods.
besides the right size.

I have a real nice set of Knee/shin guards that you can HAVE. I'll bring them next week.
You will want a good full coverage chest protector with lot's of protection around the shoulder area. Ask me how I know. I always liked Thor brand the best. Some of the newer under jersey stuff is nice.
Most jerseys do little more than add style. They don't have enough strength to protect you from rash. If I was going to do a bunch of woods riding I would look at some of the dedicated 2 piece suits. I would actually wear my Tourmaster Transitions touring gear for woods gear. This has decent armor and great rash protection.
Buy the best boots you can afford. I like Sidi boots for their great ankle protection. They also have a very stout steel shank in the soul to support your foot better.
I could go on.... Come see me next week and we can yak about it over a cold one.
I spend my money on boots and helmet. The rest of the stuff is pretty generic until you go for the $$ gear. As Paul mentioned you can get great deals on closeout gear right now. I just picked up some new gear for dual sport riding. Pants, jersey, gloves for $119 and they weren't the cheapest deal.
I've had great experience with Rockymountainatvmc.com
I'm leaning towards trail/woods riding. I got turned towards Klim gear. It's a bit pricey, but the fit and finish is really good, and I've been told the durability is superior. I paid about 150 for the mesh/vented pants and 60 maybe for the shirt. I still need to get some hard armor but I'm happy with how the Klim stuff has held up so far with my spills in the sand pit.
+ on knee pads. I don't wear them but if I did I would still have the skin on my knees back.
The klim stuff is excellent...and cheap is okay for most everything else.. Except for boots. I'd wear a cheap helmet before cheap boots again.

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
+1 for closeouts and used. i like buying used boots on eBay and resoling them. already broken in and you just freshen them up. (i cant stop buying old A* Vectors)
all the big names are similar in quality but i have to agree that for off-road, my (used) Klim Mojave's are sweet, way better than the last 2 or 3 pairs of Thor Ride pants. just grabbed a vented Klim jersey to match.
for protection, buy everything you can. i still like the old skool kidney belt, over jersey chest protector, elbow guards, etc. knee guards are a must along with proper boots. i modded my CP for a Leatt and wear it every ride, woods or track, dont even know it's there.

Personally, I think the best invention was over the boots pants... I would never go back to the other type.
As John said, helmet and boots are the main items, so skimp elsewhere.
I like over the boot pants for woods/mud and traditional pants (tucked in) for moto-x.
Closeout stuff is key. MX gear really doesn't change year to year. Shit my 20 year old stuff isn't much different from my current stuff.
Good helmet, googles, boots are clutch.
+1 on what Tony mentioned. The over the boots for woods/trail riding keeps alot of junk out of your boots if it gets wet and/or muddy. Plus if you buy the type that the legs zip off and turn into shorts it can make the ride home more comfortable without having to change in the lot.
Heard nothing but good things about Klim gear.
If anyone would make one in size fat guy (not that you have that problem) I would be looking to get one of the under jersey protective jerseys. IMHO less likely to get caught up in tree limbs etc. when riding through the woods than an over the jersey chest protector.
Knee pads are a must IMHO.
Boots, get the best ones you want to afford. My Gaernes have been awesome.
Helmet, you already know the answer on this one.
When we going riding????

I picked up a New Bell Moto 8 (Close out for like $150)
I have the chest and boots. I like my Death Rage armored gauntley gloves that will no longer provide protection onthe pavement for protection. for soem reasion I'm not so much of a fan of the MX gloves. They seem too light.
I was turned onto Klim when I got my balacava. I love the quality and was peeking in that direction. at the off road gear.
Pants wise inside vs out. I can see where the over the boot will help with the elements.
Kit , the only foot that gets trown out is when i'm flying off the bike..LOL But I hear you.

ive been piecing together for a little while now.
ive got the helmet and boots. ive also got some light duty elbow pads but i might look into something tougher. i still need knee/shin guards and i want some pants that can zip off into shorts. the couple of times that ive ridden i just wore dickies shorts and i liked wearing shorts since it was hot out. ive got a jersey but will probably get another.
oh ya, i still need a bike![]()

The Klim overboot pants have good velcro adjustability, so they can be tight around the boot and work fine for MX. THey are cooler, but much lighterweight (less protective) than real MX gear. THey are also really expensive for what you are actually getting. I do like mine though...
For the money, thor core pants on closeout are the best deal going. They are in the boot style.

Gino once you get those deathrages muddy and wet you will be buying a pair of motocross gloves.
BUY 2 SETS OF GLOVES keep one in your camelback. I hate riding with muddy wet gloves. Somehow I always manage to fall in a water or mud hole.
Get good boots post up here and get some used shit before you go buying some stuff.
Oh and one other thing get the quick strap for your goggles you will thank me later. It is the best 8 bucks you will ever spend and it will keep your gogles mint! http://www.google.com/products/catal...d=0CF8Q8wIwAQ#

Hey Gino - Welcome to the woods!
RockyMountainatvmc.com has killer deals in Sept. + Oct. I buy MSR stuff every fall.
The Leatt brace is a must for me and I don't ever feel it on me.
My Tech 10s were well worth the fortune I paid. I love them.
