    essential dirt bike gear???

Dennis Kirk closeouts are usually "dirt" cheap (bad). I got thor boots for 35 bucks this year. They're not great at keeping water out, but they are very protective. I may upgrade when I find a smokin deal on more premium boots.

Jerseys and pants go cheap too. Fox and Thor seem to be made a little better than the rest. Knee guards (cheapos will do), elbow guards (spend a little more than the minimum). Helmets, I like the HJC composite shell ones, but that's up to you. Chest protector, I'd try them on before buying, then order online. for like 250 total, you can get hooked up.

I agree, I went with a lot of Thor gear, affordable and durable. Boots are essential, one ride in shoes will tell you why MX boots are worth every penny. Also helps to get the long ass MX Socks, cushiony all day comfort. I didn't ride with a chest protector, but I never got beaned by a rock either. Gloves, I had 2 pair, half way thru the day swap 'em. Good luck and enjoy.

What they said... ATGATT. If you ride (or will ride) in the woods, rocky trails etc you might consider a chect protector and elbow pads in the jersey.
Falls are a lot less traumatic with good gear on.

I like to be able to try helmets and boots on but the rest can be had on-line.
    Best,
    Rob

Synthetic everything.............DO NOT BUY ANYTHING COTTON.

Seriously you will sweat you're balls of. Even wear synthetic moisture wicking underwear.
Helmet, Boots, get special over the calf boot socks, knee, and elbow pads first and foremost. Get yourself a good set of goggles with at least 3 layers of foam so the sweat doesn't drip in your eyes. Gloves.

    then a chest protector

Elbow and knee pads, worth every penny.

Brockton Cycle has a good selection of gear. Rough estimate for gear, the bare minimum for woods style riding.

    Helmet $100+
    Boots 100+
    Knee Pads 25
    Elbow pads 20
    Gloves 20
Safety Glasses 10 (don't care for goggles in the woods)

Never in my life had them, so I'll disagree that they're esential.

I've stopped wearing my elbow guards because they contribute to arm pump (elastic squeezing forearms). But I can't imagine why one wouldn't use knee guards. There's no downside and they are cheap.

A friend of mine took my KDX for lap of my local track wearing jeans and workboots, and broke his knee... I bought a spare set of knee guards just to lend to people...

Yeh, i wear all the gear... and I'll say it... I'm a fragile vagina. But when I crash I can get right back up & keep goin and the gear doesn't really get in my way any. I wear my elbow guards JUST tight enough to stay in place. And the ones I got fit really well so i can leave em very loose, that way they don't give me much arm pump at all.

Kidney belt helps a lot, too & they're pretty cheap... 15-25 bucks

Don't listen to these honkies. All you really need is boots and a helmet. The rest can come later.

    essential dirt bike gear???

To make it easier to get to work on Monday heres my free advice:

A good helmet, goggles, a chest, back, and shoulder protector (Fox makes a good one), a jersey with light pads for the elbows, gloves, pants (with hip pads), hard shelled knee pads (I like the ones that strap to the leg instead of slip into pockets in the pants), and a good pair of boots (MX or enduro soles depending on the main type of riding)

    essential dirt bike gear???

I wear soft cap BMX knee pads under my MX pants. They work mint. Getting a rock blown into your kneecap from the rear tire of a angry 450 isn't fun.

Kidney belt is mint too, cause I'm fat and old and it helps keep my back feeling OK.
