getting an engine back in the frame

is there any other way besides wrestling the 100lb engine against a rolling frame to get the thing back in?

I've honestly been wiggling for the last 1-1/2 hours trying to get the engine back in, and it just won't go in

I can get part of the front in, but the back won't even be close...or I can get the back close to how it's supposed to go in, but the front might as well be a 6" hunk of metal, designed to be the perfectly wrong shape to go back in the frame

I've pretty removed as much of it as I can, short of torching off parts of the frame

    any tips?

    it's a '00 XR80R btw

    dude.. it's an 80cc motor!
Put the bike up on a stand and drop that fucker in.
You got it out, right? ...and you remember how it came out, right? The KTM motor can be a bitch... only seems to work if I lead with the valve covers. Even if you had the exact same bike as me it would be really tough to explain... it's more of a trial and a shitload of error thing.

PS- didn't you go to MIT

    ahh, fugit...I got it

there is no good way...I ended up stripping more crankcase parts and just wiggled/pushed around until I could slide in a mounting bolt

honestly, unless I absolutely have to (and I'll videotape myself doing it), I don't ever want to take an engine out of the frame

    mit? wasn't me...

I have no sympathy for you seeing as how one of your old friends(me) lives a solid 5 minutes away and you didn't think to call looking for a hand. Dumbass

Really? You have to be kidding man....

I had my engine out of the bike, top end/cylinder/piston swapped to another engine and then back into the bike, by myself, in an hour and fifteen minutes.

You were doing something very, very wrong I think.

Re: getting an engine back in the frame

I just had my wife push in the bolt when I had the engine lined up on my TTR. Wasn't much of a problem, but the frame is an open design with out a cradle (bolt on cradle was added).

It probably weighs about 70lbs, just lift it up and get one bolt in, then wiggle from there.

Re: getting an engine back in the frame

A few tricks I picked up over the years.
Basics: Make sure the bike is secure on a workstand - keeps you from chasing it around the garage. Remove the tank, seat, side panels, anything light and easy to jiggle back into place.

The big trick - loop a tie down through the rear wheel, over the rear fender and snug it up. This takes the pivot for the swingarm out of the way - pay attention to the spacers and washers when you pivot it back into place.

Re: getting an engine back in the frame

I don't know what to say. I removed and installed an '86 XR **600** motor by myself many years ago, after replacing the third gear set. No jack. No stand. No big deal, really... I did poke a hole in my hatchway door trying to ride the thing out of the cellar, though.
    Maybe hit the gym?
BTW- Just another reason 4 strokes *suck*. You'd be having no problem if that was a CR80 engine.
