I agree that Paul is going to have a Blast with those tires... The wider knob spacing will allow for better grip as the day messes up the ice surface. The most important thing is just to get out there and have fun! My son & I are already looking forward to the ice freezing and getting out there... KDX200, WR400F, CRF450R... run what ya brung!!!

Didn't read the whole thread. Are you guys planning on Hamilton Rod and Gun this year?

Paul is convincing me to get in on this. I live on a lake that stays frozen until the end of April. Maybe I'll get some riding in this off season after all. I have Kold Kutters that I'll be screwing in myself (maybe with Paul's help?) Hint, hint. Just to goof around.

There is a lake 3/4 of a mile from my house that plows an oval and race outlaw cars on it on Sundays when the ice is good. After the races I've seen caddys, expeditions, and dirty bikes zipping around. It's in Jaffrey, lake Contoocook.

Was more talking in a general sense, but Jaffery would work out great, my folks live in Marlborough. I'm in the same boat as the other newbs, need to figure out how I want to get my bike into it - studded tires just being the first concern. Have seen a number of guys running some steel tubing around front and rear wheels, assuming because it would suck to roll a studded tire spinning at high speed over your leg?

Without liners, probably to long. 5/8" screws is about the max for a new set of tires

I guess it depends on the tire you buy and the knob height, there aren't to many with a knob height of more than 5/8-3/4" The body of the tire isn't as thick as you'd think, and you should try to sink the heads in a bit so they stay in better.
From what I've seen in the past, 1/2" screws usually pull out even on the smallest of bikes, and 5/8" screws will rip the knobs off the tire before they pull out.

Re: Getting set up for ice riding

For recreational riding, I have used 1/2" long screws in the front tire, and 5/8" long screws in the rear tire - all with no special liners or reinforcements. Any longer than that risks a punctured tube.

Are 1/2" usually too long for the front?

Here is a great video on studding up a Kenda Ice tire. Many of the tips, like the patterns, and angles can be used for screwing any tire:
