What do y'all recommend gear wise? I was pretty much thinking MX gear with an under layer and some snowboarding gear on top. Sound about right?

Last time I played I wore cold weather underarmor, leathers, MX pants over the leathers, a heavy sweatshirt over the leathers and a long adventuring touring lined motorcycle jacket. This was near or below zero weather at midnight in the middle of a LARGE lake.

MX/snowboarding combo is good, as long as you don't care if you happen to trash the snowboarding gear...

Gear wise. I'm going for my Tourmaster Transitions gear. It's heavy Cordura and has CE armour inside. And it's warm.....

I'm heading to the test pond here in a bit...

2-Strokes like to have a bit more fuel with colder temperatures & typically less fuel with warmer temperatures. An ideal measurement of Air Density is with a Longacre Air Density Gauge for a reference point. Air Density affected by Humidity, Temperature & Barometric Pressure. If riding on Ice, I typically go at least 1 main jet bigger than what I ride in the woods. Can also adjust the Mid-range by a needle clip of the needle to richen up slightly & then re-check the air-screw for best, strongest idle with quick acceleration. Watch your exhaust coming out of silencer for color. If too gray, then probably too lean.

I hit the little pond at my in laws for a test session.

The old girl ran pretty good. The tires are hooking up good.

I am getting a bit of spark knock.... Need to sort that out a bit.

Damn this thing is fun on the ice...

I'm using 1" screws into a liner. just the standard ama legal kold kutters. I'm really pissed about the damage. Doesn't seem like a normal issue

Increase preload & compression damping so it rides a little higher?

Ya, I increased the compression 6 clicks from normal woods riding and it still hit after landing some harder wheelies

Re: Getting set up for ice riding

If anyone is interested I've got a set of dual sided AMA tires for sale, used maybe 4-5 times. $300 for the set. 19 rear and 21 front. You can email me at info@woodcraft-cfm.com if you're interested.

I've also got a set of studded MX tires for sale for $150....good shape. These are great for woods riding all winter long, we've been doing it for years. Also 19 rear and 21 front.

Re: Getting set up for ice riding

I've been down the road of making them myself.....unfortunately they never work close to as well as the Fredette tires. Best of luck though.... the only way to be even close is to line your tire with another tire and screw right through them both. From personal experience, the ones that go only as deep as the knobs on your tire rip right out after while.

Yeahhhh, I'd love to pick up some dedicated ice tires but it's just more than I"m willing to spend right now.

fwiw I have a set of Erics old ice tires. Way better then making them yourself especially if you dont know how to make a proper ice tire.

Yikes! I have a 2013 500 EXC so I'll be curious to see what you figure out. Are you on stock springs and do you fall within their weight range? The EXC's have a pretty steep steering angle to make them maneuverable in the woods. I never even considered that the tire could get that close.

The EXC's also have very soft compression damping, and the WP open cartridge forks blow through the stroke pretty easily - again, for a plush trail ride. Short of dropping the tubes in the clamps as far was you can, dialing in as much spring pre-load as you can, and also dialing in a lot of compression damping - the only other thing you can do is to buy some new clamps with more offset, or a different angle. All of these things will have some impact on the handling, so serious ice racers will be spending some time finding the hot set up.

Thanks for the insight, but I'm not looking to get too serious here. I kept the wheelies to a minimum and I don't think I hit at all today.
