Getting started in MX Racing (info)

Rather than clutter up my For Sale thread, I figured I'd make a seperate topic and we can jive about it here.

    Nazo and Oreo said: "OH!??
We gotta talk, I want to know some info about doing a MX race. I think at an Amateur level it would be fun, can't say I would make a whole race without crashing hard.....but I'd still like to maybe try it once or twice.
    "

As I mentioned, I hope/plan to do some MX and Supermoto racing along with LRRS next season. I've therefore been sniffing around the MX scene, trying to learn the ropes a bit, and get a idea of how it's laid out. It's similiar to LRRS... but very different at the same time. Thankfully due to work I've been around and in contact with quite a few Amateur racers. Here's what I've gotten figured out.

    Racing Orgs
    ----------------------
NEMX / NESX http://www.nemx.org/ http://www.nesupercross.com/ - A fairly popular and solid org. NESX refers to the Mototown winter series run by the NEMX people.
NEMA http://www.nemamx.com/ - Geared towards young riders. Can't ride as a adult unless have a kid racing in the Org.
NESC http://www.nescmotocross.com/ - Generally considered the hardest competition (along with the Upstate NY District riders. D-36 I think..).

The three bigger orgs. There are a few other orgs sprinkled around, but these three pop up the most. Personally I'm going to go with NEMX as most of the racers I know and have talked to run with them and I've stopped in to check out a recent NESX race. I like the class structure too (they have a 25+ Age Group along with a D entry level class). More on the D Class later. I like the tracks they go to as well and I hope they add MX207 to the lineup for next year.

    Class / Skill Levels
    -------------------------------
Motocross does things by letters, this is how it works.

A - Expert / Pro - White plates with black numbers
B - Amateur - Yellow plates with black numbers
C - Novice - Black plates with white numbers
    D - NEMX ONLY - Rookie class

Pretty similar to Loudon in the rankings. Except in the MX world apparently sandbagging is extremely prevelent, riders don't move up until they are literally kicked up. NOTE that NEMX has a "D" class, apparently you can do up to 6 races as a D rider, which is a complete NEWB, akin to the Rookie Race at Loudon. Way to get a feel for MX racing without jumping into a C moto where kids are out there 'going for it'.

NEMX has the typical 125 and 250 classes, along with good Vet Open classes.

    125 - 125 two strokes and 250 four strokes
    250 - 250 two strokes and 450 four strokes
25+ - 25 and up age and any full sized bike (125's and up)
    30+ - same as 25, etc etc

As for a litmus test on what the competition level is like in C.. My buddy Aaron Marcotte (ironically enough called me tonight) is a 30+ racer on a KXF250 who's been racing last few years. He's a "C" rider still and finishes Top 10'ish in the 125 class and Top 3 (with some wins) the 25+ and 30+ classes. See here: http://tracksideonlineresults.com/tr...cer.asp?n=4716 He's of the opinion (we rode together last month) that if I started racing tomorrow, I'd be easy top 10 in C class (ha ha ha right). We're about the same speed at Mototown and he just went 1-1 in 30+ and 8-6 (6th overall) in 125C. So that's a idea I suppose of what that level is like. Remember two motos = overall finish position

    Rulebook and Fees
    -------------------
http://www.nemx.org/forms/NEMX_2005_Rule_Book.pdf Link to 2005 NEMX rulebook. Good info on scoring system and classes.

    $85 - Year membership
    $20 - One Day membership
$35 - Entry fee per class

That's all I got for now on overall shit. Fire away with any other questions.

I've been a member of the NESC as an amateur for a number of years finally giving up the ghost this year, and not renewing my membership. NEMX had gained a lot of NESC riders, primarily VET riders, some of whom I am friends with due to the fact that many, if not all of NEMX events are held on Saturdays, where NESC holds their events on Sundays. I haven't been really up to date on that, but NESC had always had the strongest competition, but a reputation for being real sticklers for registration. Also for part of the reason some NESC riders went to NEMX. I have not, but also stopped racing a couple of years ago, so I am not up to par with the who's where anymore. But if you'd rather ride on Saturday than Sunday, to my knowledge, NEMX is where to ride.
