    GoPro's and dirty toys

So where do you guys mount your GoPro's on your helmets? The top? Side? Any benefits to mounting it one way or another? Have it one way and wish you did it another way?
I'm thinking the side so it's less likely that trees will rip it off, but then does the helmet get in the way of footage?

A lot of people mount the under the visor or on the side to keep them from being ripped off. I haven't had much luck with mine offroad.

From a video quality perspective, they look the best on top of the helmet, full view and you can still get a sense of speed seeing the visor. A friend of mine had a chest mount, which was also cool looking video, but a little more shaky. I tried under the visor and found it to be distracting while riding

I do the side. It's more out of the way and gives a good perspective.

I watch a lot of "vloggers", unfortunately a guilty pleasure of mine, mainly a few who rode the wr250 to see what their impressions were. Out of all the ones I subscribe to, "MotoTrippin", seems to have the best view for the pov stuff, he mounts his under his visor and keeps it as tipped upwards as possible.

I mounted it once to the rear fender facing backwards. Actually came out much smoother than I thought it would. Had Joel following me. I imagine the vid would be much more boring if there was no one following.

imho - I don't like top of the helmet...too high up...makes the visual of your speed a lot slower

some of us are slow as dead dogs...need a lower angle to make the video speed youtube worthy

    Re: GoPro's and dirty toys

^^ sadly, this is a reality for most dirt bikes...some guys get married, have kids, buy a house, get a dog, etc. etc. and the bike remains parked for awhile. When they just want someone to take care of it/use it, or just want to quickly liquidate for cash/no BS, I buy them....so now I have ten! do the maintenance, fix them up, and sit on them at a slightly higher price on CL "until I find the right buyer".

@ OP - generally speaking, if you put it on the bike (ie. handlebars), it'll bounce around too much...that's why it's good to put it on a visor or chest mount. I personally like Paul ED's side-visor method...offers a pretty good view, adequate speed projection, and it's close to eye level. Chestie is cool too...makes you look a lot faster than top of the helmet...check out Paul ED's posts for side-helnet view, A13x's videos for chestie view

    Re: GoPro's and dirty toys

I like Oreo's top mount cam, you get a good view of what he's looking at.
And sorry about the crash man, get back on that thing and ride slower like us old guys, OK, slower like me.
One of the reasons I want the cam is because of all the critters I have been seeing on the bike. I got within 5 feet of a deer yesterday and just stopped next to him, he didn't know what to make of me and just stood there.

Trees? There are zero trees in any of your shots.

I've done every helmet mount option except that crazy spinning one on the 3' arm suspended from the top of your helmet that gopro uses in their videos. I like the view from under the visor the best, plus it tends to protect the camera a little better.

    let's see moar gopro stillz!!

    some trees

    some desert and trails

    some street

    some 450 mx

and here's something I've NEVER posted before - a street bike shot, lol (yes...I actually have one...not everything I ride is dirty)

^^ but as you can see, I'm mid-wheelie (in a closed track environment of course), and with the camera on top of the helmet, you can barely determine that the front wheel is in the air, without seeing the shadow...also when it's that high up, the camera is looking down, and you can aim it higher but you won't see your speedo/handlebars

    Re: GoPro's and dirty toys

just pulled the trigger on this...

    proshotcam

    sample footage:

    review:

    -non-obstructed by helmet
    -not as shaky as chesty
-not so high it loses your speed/perception from being on top of helmet
-right in front of your mouth - you can talk over the roar of the bike w' the skeleton backdoor
-newer cameras - you can see the blinking light
-not as likely to get knocked off by vines and branches

I must say, every ride that I don't bring the gopro, I regret not bringing the gopro

    the perspective is good!
