    Hip protection

    What do you guys use?

I'm sick & tired of limping around for upwards of a week after a little low-side. Want something that'll fit under my dirty pants and leathers so it's gotta be slim, but I want good protection.

    Re: Hip protection

    Soccer goalie shorts

    Or Football shorts

I was thinking of picking up something this winter. I got this idea after Kate got a Sports therapy magazine and noticed something similar.

What are McDavid Padded hDc Shorts (Guard)?
Pro style compression shorts with extra padding for the hips and thighs. Perfect for football goalkeepers, skiers and snowboarders.

    When Can I Use Them?
Specially designed for football goalkeepers, as well as skiers and skateboarders. To protect the hips and thighs from impact injuries. For the prevention and treatment of hamstring, thigh and groin injuries.

    Which size do I need?
Measure around the waist, above the hips.

    Youth (Medium) 60-65cm (24-26")
    Youth (Large) 65-70cm (26-28")
    Small 70-80cm (28-32")
    Medium 80-85cm (32-34")
    Large 85-95cm (34-38")
    X-Large 95-105cm (38-42")
    XX-Large 105-115cm (42-46")
    How do they work?
The patented HexPad technology of the McDavid Padded hDc Shorts (Guard) features a hexagonal patterned mesh of flexible fabric, which protects the hips and thighs from impact injuries.

The McDavid Padded hDc Shorts (Guard) padded shorts are also compression shorts that provide warmth and support to the muscles and joints, preventing and treating thigh, hamstring and groin injuries. At the same time, the McDavid's hDc Moisture Management System allows perspiration to be wicked away from the skin, keeping you cool and dry in hot summer conditions; warm and dry in cold winter conditions.

This combination of protection and comfort makes McDavid hDc Padded Shorts the choice of many top athletes

    Re: Hip protection

My wife got me something similar from Dicks.
I originally got them for snowboarding, but they would work for other sports.
Funny, my Vanson Leathers have serious hip protectors velcro'ed in them, but the form fitting padded shorts feel better as the pads stay put.

    Re: Hip protection

I have used these Bohn shorts from the beginning. Once the body heats up the foam pads, they conform very well. Have been down a number of times on my hips, sacrum and thighs with no ill effects and have felt that the shorts did a good job.

    www.bohnarmor.com/catalog/proddetail.php?prod=BGK

I don't, however, have a good control group test of crashing without them. And the desire to wear good hip and chest protection will eventually require me to get custom leathers, but I'm comfortable with that.

Haha! Bingo. I use vanson hip armor. It just velcros into my mx pants. Much bigger and thicker than the stuff that comes with the pants.

I'm looking for some quality compression shorts with padding though...

I used a pair of NIKE football shorts for roadracing, supermoto, and mx. Loved em. Too bad I can't seem to find them...

    Re: Hip protection

I had the fox version and the pads warped after a couple washings and caused chaffing. Don't recommend.

I have these and think they are the best I've tried. I have tested them at Loudon three times and don't even remember feeling the ground and they don't seem to remind me they are there either. I was using a set of compressions shorts that i used to do bicycle road rides and that seemed to work ok. I didn't test those on the ground tho...

R.E.D. protection impact shorts. For snowboarding. Not sure if they still make the ones I have. hard abs plastic piece with foam padding. They are awesome.

    Re: Hip protection

I have some EVS impact shorts I bought for dirt riding / mtn biking and they suck. Tailbone protection is too long, legs are too long, and the waist is too high (I'm 5'10" or so - certainly not a munchkin).
I'm definitely keeping an eye on this thread for something better.

EVS seems to be a good company, I think I just picked the wrong product.

It wouldn't be any different then using an Under Armor base layer under your suit. The only problem with wearing the Bohn undersuit as described in the commercial is there is no abrasion protection. Jeans, and then the armored suit, would pretty much disintegrate.

As far as melting into the skin goes, the army discontinued using Under Armor for this reason because of what happens in an IED blast. Unless your bike happens to blow up right next to you, a rider wouldn't have to worry about the stuff melting. My experience with crashing with similar base layers is that the layer will abrade away at the impact points. Other then that, I haven't experienced any lowsides that have generated enough heat to melt the base layer without having worn through the leather completely and then abrading the base layer away.
