unfortunately, I don't have enough screws...or the correct type of screw (these are the "original gold" screws sold at the local dealership) to stud this tire with multiple screws/knob...this single screw setup is just to romp around in the blizzard tonight, "try" out some light ice riding, and do some trail riding before putting on my DOT knobbies and making the XR a dual sport

once the RM finally works, I'll buy the 1" kold kutter or pro gold screws w' some street tires as liners (I have an extra set of wheels for it), and that will be my ice bike for a couple seasons

Screws are for ice riding, studs are for trail riding

Hate to be a preacher but half those screws are going to rip out if you try trail riding in the snow..then you'll create a flat hazzard for other riders

oops, I'm clearly doing this wrong

but what's so sloppy about that tire? the lineup and pattern? or just the single screw/knob deal? and what's so bad about ice screws in the front tire on trails? I figure the front wouldn't really be subject to that much force, that they would get ripped out on a trail. It's the rear mounted ice screws that seem to me, to be at higher risk for getting ripped out on a trail...and I'm planning on making those studded from the inside out with tapcon screws.

this is really just a trial to test it out and figure out a thing or two...not really a serious ice setup by any means. The RM will get the proper setup...just for ice...liners in the tires, and liners on the outside so they never see pavement, all on extra rims. The XR is just getting toyed around with...

One would think the front tire just roles around while the back does all the work. There's a lot more force on the front tire than you think The screws are also not even close to being as hard as studs, so the ones that do stay in, will be dull and rounded over after the first or 2nd ride.

Here's what i'm working on this evening...or at least until I lose power from the storm! I still have to index the heads, but you get the idea

take note how the studs are (mostly) indexed in union's rear tire. i was taught to index the heads in a similar way. i also use a dab of Gorilla Glue on the tire before drilling in... but i've only studded minibike tires, not sure the GG matters with bigger bikes.

Well, the lake pretty much turned to unsafe slush this past weekend. BUT, temps've been in the teens again these last coupla nights and the lake's been singing to us again, making all kinds of funky noises. I didn't bother plowing a track last week 'cuz I knew it'd just turn to shit with the warm weekend we just had. I'll be drilling holes (heh, heh!) again this weekend to check it out...

I've never used it either. But I've heard varied stories about using it (or like some sort of vulcanizing agent). Some swear by it, others have told me it doesn't do shit, one guy said it tore his knobbies apart when they pulled out. Not saying either way though, I have no experience with it...
