    Re: Ice, Ice Baby!

Okay, this makes NO sense. A buddy & I checked on the track last night. One area has about 2-3" of standing water on it. How could this be? Temp's haven't gotten above 15 degrees all week and night time temps've been at or below 0, with one night down to about -15...

I can understand all the slush STILL under all that snow all around the lake (and other lakes), but this defies all logic. Any other part of the track we shoveled or plowed to expose the slush has frozen solid. That particular part we did some plowing on too, but it's just not freezing...

The only things I can think of is that maybe some dickheads are still drilling holes in that area, or maybe the weight of the snowbanks from the plowing is somehow putting pressure in that area, somehow allowing water to seep up onto the surface. I just dunno...

the weight of the snowcover is submerging the ice, just like an iceberg

also, the ice is prolly melting from underneath

no plans to street it , I will gear it down for the woods to keep some trail miles off the WRR . weather pending the new chain and 52T sprocket should be here tomorrow . FOR now it will stay with stock gears for the ice .

that is a weird one. Cracks or any other abnormalities. You are right it's been
so fawking cold how would there be standing water unless it's moving.

Officials at the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department are reminding those getting outdoors this winter to stay safe on the ice.

"This year, we've already seen wide-ranging temperatures, deep snow and high winds that can shift ice on waterbodies,"

...Keep in mind that it is possible for ice to be thick, but not strong, because of varying weather conditions. Weak ice is formed when warming trends break down ice, then the slushy surface re-freezes...

Not sure exactly what it looks like out there but why not float your snowblower bucket over the slush and get the track widened as much as reasonably possible then drill your holes to flood it?

We tried that. The slush just sucks the machines in and gets 'em stuck. In my case, it also froze the throw chute solid. In Randy's case, it kept throwing his track off the pully...

As for flooding it, my buddy's got a pump we can use for that. Drilling really doesn't do a helluvalot unless the surrounding ice is heavy enough to push the water up through the hole...

My buddy just ventured out there and it's STILL not frozen in that area. Not that I thought it would be. This weekend's not looking good no matter how you slice it...

The whole area Jay was plowing when you were riding bitch, from the fishing hole all around that sweeper. It's still under a coupla inches of standing water. Yet everything else is well frozen. Even that whole section we widened with shovels, exposing all that slush is frozen solid...

And given all the slush still under the snow, plowing or snowblowing an alternative course isn't very likely...

I still say I just flood the whole fargin' thing and give it another week...

Sounds like Randy's machine was doing well enough until the track jumped off...?

Not sure if of the designs on your buckets but mine has a blade at the bottom edge that can be flipped around if need be which reduces the forcing of snow into the bucket.

Same as mine. Trust me, we tried...

And Randy's machine KEPT tossing the track. Not just once, not twice, hell not even three times. Keep counting! Even tossed it just getting the thing back to my house...

    The entire lake's like that...

The slush under the snow was 1/4" ice then 4+" of water, so once the tire/track broke through the slush it would pull the blower down....it was just a nightmare.
It's weird that the section we plowed is under water right now.
Maybe the water is seeping out from under the snow.
If I had use of a atv/plow I would come up Thursday or Friday and work on it.

Just an idea, but maybe we can cut the track layout out with a chainsaw, we can all pitch in to rent a crane so we can pick the ice chunk up and flip it upside down? Smooth side up!

ya, I was throwing snow & slush pretty good, but the double ice layer with 4"-6" of slush & water in between, dropped the snowblower so that the top layer of ice would snag the top of the track and pull it off the front idler wheel

BUT, even if I wan't throwing the track, my blower was on the virge of icing up as well, the shoot on Stonemans snowblower was clogged, mine wasn't that far from being clogged, when I got home, I blasted my snowblower with heat from my salamander to get the ice off,

I really want to give it a shot. Half the chute on mine is plastic and I have yet to see this thing clog. Basically what's in the picture...

Thinking I could fab some kinda ski-type setup using angle iron attached to....well.....a ski of some kind and effectively widen the skid shoe a bit which would help with getting sucked in.

Just trying to get some other ideas going.

sorry to break up the track maintenance talk, but yowza...has anyone here run an ice screw with a head this long on a 3/4" screw?

it either kicks ass and gets really good traction, or sucks and rips out easily!

the 1-1/4" screws have a funky cut in the head design too

    they're MF1 screws: http://www.marcelfournier.ca/index-en.php
