The new to me Dirty toy should be ready hopefully by this Sunday! Hardest part is installing the 1000 screw's. Oh wait that's after I mount my first tire. Should I mount it first, or install the Kold Cutter's! Front tire is already mounted, so that's staying on.
I'll follow the thread to try and ride with some of you!
So, I know popular opinion(and one I agree with) is that a full size bike needs true ice tires with liners and full length screws(and both of mine do).
I'm wondering what popular opinion is on using short 3/4" screw and no liners on a low horsepower mini; specifically an XR100? Worth it, or will I spend more time picking up spit screws than riding?

XR100 might work fine. The fredettes we bought are massively overbuilt for the job. But ultra-awesome too.
But maybe use 1" screws and a heavy duty tube cut as a liner.
My aunt in central Maine said sleds are being reported on a daily basis falling through the ice the past week. We haven't had steady enough cold weather to make thick ice.
It was -4 this morning at my house and I just checked one of the small ponds with a drill... less than 4" thick, and it's been ice covered for over 3 weeks.
The risk is that you put a screw in too far and puncture the tube and now you are stuck taking the tire apart anyhow. I would put the screws into the tire off the wheel, check for protruding screws that will cause flats, address the screws that come through such that they won't cause flats, then install the tire and tube onto the wheel.
Installation
Keep in mind that how the heads are indexed on the knobs of the tire will have a dramatic effect on how well the tire works on the ice. I re-indexed the tires I bought after one ride and the bike felt completely different and actually hooked up.
I'd need to either get 17" knobbies, or a pair of 19/16 wheels.

17 in knobbies???
They make 'em now for the SM crowd. (Kids these days!) Just not for any wheel that narrow.
70/100-17 knobbies are available. Also, these wheels fit a 120/70, so some old block style rains would work(I have one).
That's just one idea for a tire I could put screw in that fits the existing wheels. It would make more sense to get a pair of stock wheels and mount the Trailwings I have, and toss some screws in those.
All this is very excessive, because I have other ice bikes...but excess is fun.

My friend put 1/2-3/4" Kold Kutters into the stock (worn) knobbies on a KLX140. They not only are hanging in there, it works far better than I imagined with snow/slush buildup on the ice. Definitely worth it on a small bike!
Good to hear!

I like you people. You make me look sane. Keep it up.
Snowmobile trail groomer went thru much further north in Jackman, Maine

Cut out of work early today and hit the ice before the rain comes. Put a novice rider on my bike and got him dragging a little peg after some work on body position and looking through the turn! It's very rewarding teaching (corrupting) a noob.
Protip - a little super glue on the threads of the screw before adding it to your tire helps. After approximately 3hrs of abuse, I've lost 4 total screws out of the rear tire and zero on the front of a 450.
Between 10-12" everywhere I checked my lake this weekend. Besides plowing out the kids skating area (I just do pretty much our whole cove now), I'll be carving up the road course again. The Rappy is due for some repairs that I'll be wrapping up these next couple days, then putting the ice tires on...
Also picking up a cheap but running and all together Baja 70 dirtbike for next to nothing for the boy I'll be studding up the tires on...
really hope you guys don't stud like this
*sigh*

but ya'll not crazy...ya'll not russian...ya'll not crazy russians
Don't know why you say that. For that application, other than being ridiculously labor intensive, studding the tires like that seems to work just fine.
Can't really make ice tires for a road bike the same way you could for a dirtbike. Just isn't enough material in a typical road tire. Guess you could use something like an Avon Distanzia or TKC80 with ice screws but you would still need long screws and a liner of some sort to go through the tire and into otherwise you'd likely be spitting screws everywhere.
I've seen people using snowmobile track studs through a street tire from the inside out. Just like Honda/Red Bull did for Marquez http://www.redbull.com/en/motorsport...togp-bike-alps This was just the poor mans way of doing something similar.
