Oh, they're much better with air!
Got out for my first ride of the season today. Awesome time at Butler Motor Speedway.
I managed to run out of gas after starting with a full tank this afternoon. New record. But really, I had two helpers to keep riding while I was BS'ing. We had a senior show up on her TTR125! She was cool, but I just couldn't convince her to try out the 450:dunno:
I rode ice yesterday too. Just a quick rip @ the usual local spot. Ran into Rolker and Woody and some others. Also managed to drain an entire tank. Goes fast on the 2-stroke. Also screwed with the powervalve spring adjustment. Huuuge difference.
Yesterday was good.

Got a little seat time on Mike's 250 Rippah
Pictures or it all did not happen!
arrived yesterday from TT, some good info... Motorcycle Ice Tire Studding - Part One
I have found everything in that article to be true, but one thing stands out-
"To prove this, reverse a V-pattern tire, it will be all kinds of squirrelly under acceleration and then the rear will try to jump out from under the bike when you hit the brakes, it’s truly scary."
Been there, done that, AND have the pictures to prove it. If anybody that doesn't know is mounting up their new or used ice tire, ask first to make sure you get it right.
*probably doesn't apply to friction spikes*
Please post up when the second and third parts are published!
That IS a great article. nd exactly why I pay to have my tires built!
Adjuster was cranked one way when I got the bike. Opportunity never really presented itself to play with the adjuster. I adjusted it all the way the other way after I replaced the clutch side cover and had to R&R the adjuster. Basically, it completely neutered the bike. I hated it it. Backed the spring tension back up and was happy. Without tension the bike is a dog across the rev range. With tension it is a dog down low and wakes up once it hits the pipe. Much more exciting.
They say lax'ing the spring should give more power down low. I couldn't tell. I'll try this experiment again some other time once we finish out ice season. Ice isn't quite the same as woods.
Yamahas don't need it. Not that I would know. Yet.
I used a video from Kold Kutter on Youtube when studding the right side of the front tire on the Honda(it came set up for oval).

I need to educate myself about tuning the power delivery of a 2 stroke. The 96 motor and FMF pipe dramatically changed the CR250. It hits like a sledge hammer to the dick now.
