Northern Europe has ice! Road trip anyone? Wait, there is no road.
A friend of mine in Finland has had safe ice for 2 weeks now, with temps in the -20 -30 range

Our lake has a lot of slush again. The edges along the shore are just slop. Just hasn't been cold enough to get the surface nice & smooth yet. Hoping though!

Supposed to be a chilly week. Hopefully the ice starts to get a good foundation.

    Re: Ice riding winter 2012-2013

With the temps of single digits & even negative numbers for the moment, I'm thinking this weekend is going to have some spectatular Ice Racing/Riding in New England. I know of some friends that ride out on Goose Pond in Granby, CT - Southwick, MA area & also on Congamond Lakes in Southwick. Seems like a delicate subject to find a good place to ride motorcycles on Ice, without pissing off a bunch of locals that also want to use frozen ponds/lakes. I know they have Ice Racing in Sturbridge, MA on Sundays; but I'm looking for places in CT - MA that others are riding at & looking for more to share the fun. Typically, you need to have someone with snow-removal equipment to get the good Ice conditions.

I'm saving myself the headache this year and NOT maintaining a track up at my place. Yeah, I'll probably slap the ice tires on the ol' Raptor and go tear it up with the kids & shit this weekend. But dealing with the hassles of taking care of the track this year just ain't happening for me. We'll be out rippin' it up, just not on a defined track this year. At least not one that I'm maintaining...

Just maintain it by ripping around on the raptor over and over

Is the lake snow covered now?

I think I may try out a small local pond this weekend. I havn't done anything to the Raptor yet, but all I really need to do is bolt on the rear studded tires and screw the fronts. I'm guessing there's 6-8" of "black" ice here with the temps we've had all week

There's a thin layer of crust over the ice. But with the temps we've had this past week, I'm guessing the ice is fine now. There's A LOT of traffic out there (and the lake across the street) now, fer sure...

I may just end up slapping the ice tires on, putting some screws to the kids' 4-wheelers & taking 'em all out on the ice today...

    Re: Ice riding winter 2012-2013

Had a blast yesterday riding my KDX200 with Rich Paxson & Jim Fort at Goose Pond! Unfortunately, my 15+ year old studded ice tires were just a bit outdated & worn out. Time for some new Ice tires & screws. I see in these pics that guys are using studded front knobbies, while my buddies have 19" Kenda tires mounted on wheels laced up with 19" rims running 1" Gold screws. Boy do those tires stick well on the ice with minimal snow coverage. Looking forward to the warmer weather melting the top surface and re-freezing to smooth ice... now that should be fun!

    Re: Ice riding winter 2012-2013

We probably dug 4-5 inches down into the ice over the day. It doesn't develop "ruts" per se, more like ribs. They do make it tougher to rail though. We had two trucks and plowed every hour or so to remove the sugar from the surface.
