    Ice Screws

Gold Screws, Kold Kutters, or Pro Gold? I've only used the Gold Screws, but judging by pics on the interwebz, Kold Kutters & Pro Gold seem to have a more aggressive head on 'em...

    Experiences?

Kold Kutters seem to have worked well in the past.

    Re: Ice Screws

Pro Gold and Kold Kutters are identical, just a different name. The Gold Screws have a less aggressive head on them, which equals less traction.

Pro Golds actually went black last year. That's what i used last year, Pro Gold blacks in the front and pro Gold/Gold in the rears.

You just remined me, I need to plan ahead and get some 18" rears for the YFZ

I have a 19" fredette ice tire AMA legal sitting in my basement that I have no use for. I am willing to let it go mad cheap.

    It's a 350 dollar tire

I'll let it go for 250. Never even been mounted.

Yeah, the Pros & the Kutters looked a lot alike. I'll go with wunna those rather than the Golds. If you're gonna be bringing the YFZ up, I'm gonna need all the traction I can get!

Try to find "canadian's". You won't find taller heads than those!

    Re: Ice Screws

The site I posted was just the first one I stumbled upon while searching for them. I usually see them advertised as just "Canadian" ice screws.
The site I posted has some detailed ice tire building instructions, but seldom do recreational ice riders go through all that trouble. With a pretty good knobby, the longest screws you can use without risking a flat are around 5/8", or maybe 3/4" if your tire has very tall knobs. I usually run 7/16" or 1/2" long screws up front.
I do not spend much time on the frozen lakes and ponds, and prefer to ride the trails, so I go this route:

I've got my tires from last year full of Kold Kutters with the day and a half at your place on them. I'm likely going with pro tires this year. You keep the track at your place clear for me, or send your plow setup down my way so I can clear a track on my lake and they're yours.

    Re: Ice Screws

I'm not looking for tips/suggestions on HOW to stud 'em. I've done it with decent success. Just wondering about any 'real' comparo's between different brands...

I have no choice but to bring up the YFZ, the Rap needs some TLC and I don't feel like spending the coin on it. Comparing the 2 on dirt, the YFZ doesn't hook up nearly as good as the Raptor...which could be good or bad on the ice Either way, I'm pretty excited for the ice this season

How many screws are in 'em and how long are they? Or do you not know/remember?

Me thinks we should keep both places cleared...

I'm not sure how many are in them... A lot? I think the front and rear are different sizes, I don't remember which two, the good size?

If you plan on racing at all, the Canadian studs are illegal, per AMA rules.

I never asked about 'em. I know they were mentioned, but that didn't answer my question...

How do the concrete studs hold out better in the snow than kold kutters or gold screws? Do the tips pointed outwards help as opposed to the heads?

    Re: Ice Screws

Just ordered 1000 Holiday Canadian screws. We'll see how they look. They're supposed to have a taller head & better thread than the others...

    bump to see gregp's response...

I want the the mediocre level of both worlds...would some shorter concrete studs work in ice and snow?
