Ice trick for fixing your 2t pipe

So, I completely collapsed my stock pipe during the PSTR Swanzea event. I almost threw it out, thinking it was un-fixable. One of my fellow competitors referred to it as a "soup bowl" lol.

I was bored last week, so I filled it with water (80% full) and put it in the freezer overnight. Took it out in the morning to thaw. After doing this 5 times, the pipe is now the exact same shape as a new one, so it's fully usable again. Obviously, it looks like bloody fucking hell, but I don't care because I have a guard going over it.

Hopefully this helps somebody on here who has a dented up pipe. And a beer fridge in the basement.

Re: Ice trick for fixing your 2t pipe

I tried this with 2 pipes. I filled them up side by side and left them outside to freeze this winter. They would freeze hard at night and then get watery in the day with a big piece of ice still in them. After a month I saw no to little change. I wish I had your results.

It's weird - I tried outside first too. No change. The magic happens in the freezer, and only after probably 8hrs or so. It seems the ice forms first, then after it's solid the ice kinda expands more. That's what does it. Hopefully I'll have before/after pics tonight.

From the giant rust spot down was all pushed inward like a bowl. It's not pretty now but it'll work!

It was totally crushed. That's a marked improvement.

Nice results that looks much better. Just a couple of questions:

Did you have to seal off the ends of the pipe or just fill it with water and if so what did you seal it with?

Also my pipe has some small "pin" holes from the dents should these be welded first so they dont expand with the pipe?

Pigman - I was gonna send it to Pacific Crest but I was looking at $90 plus 2-way shipping. I bought a Gnarly already, so this is basically just a backup anyways. Figured I'd try to save the d'oh ray me.

Mike P - definitely weld the holes. You may end up with more as it pushes back out lol. Don't seal the small (silencer) end. Use a 1 1/2" plumber's test plug on the big end. Fill 80% thru the small hole. It's kinda cool ice will actually flow out the small hole. That's how much the water expands!

That's a great trick for sure
Now, come up with a trick that will fix the bend in my pipe...haha I have a pipe guard on mine and while I'm sure it saved the chamber from getting smashed in several times, the thing is bent so it doesn't seal against the head anymore

That is awesome. Makes sense that the freezer works better since they are like 25 below zero & outside rarely is. I know another method is to pound ball bearings into it, but you need quite a few of diff sizes.

a lot of 2stroke KTM racers do NOT use pipe guards. You guys are lucky, but the pipe bending at the cylinder can break the flange. DOH! They say it''s cheaper to fix the pipe than the cylinder.

    +1

I was never much on the guards. They look like shit and hold mud. I only ever smashed a couple pipes. I just saw them in half and pound the dent out. Then weld them back together. Easy to make them look like new.

Sadly, I don't need much help denting up the bike! We spend a lot of time on the ground together in the rocks.

Any time you want, you're welcomed to come by. The double track trails are all clear, but I haven't had time to get much done in the single track sections after all these storms. Thank you for the offer

I havn't removed my guard in a while, so I really don't know what it looks like under it, but the carbon is pretty banged up a cracked.

I had heard that a while ago and asked about it when I bought the bike. The guy said the newer KTM's have a bolt on flange that is supposed to break before any damage to the cylinder. I know mine has that bolt on flange

Mine isn't to the point I'd replace it yet. I'm thinking I'll get a few more spring rides out of it before it's totally devastated!
