Great... then this bike, and the technology as it stands, does not meet your requirements yet. However, it probably meets a lot of riders. Assuming it's an actual, typical usage 50 mile range, I'd occasionally need more. But that's maybe 1 in 20 rides? RE: xxaarraa's question, I'd bet the overwhelming majority of single track trail ride days are safely under 50. Even if many of those people occasionally do longer days.

Granted, 50 is probably optimistic conditions and if it's more like 25-35 and cruising home with one eye on the 'fuel' gauge, that's probably cutting it out as an option for a lot more people. Still perfect for someone with a decent plot of land, but fun-police neighbors.

I'll bite as I'm basically there.

Like you, I have a smallish displacement 2-stroke. Fuggin' great in New England woods trails. Not bad on the sausage-o-rama trails. But pretty miserable on the forest roads and dual-sport use.

So now I also have a WR450 that is about to get fitted with 50/50 or 20/80 rubber. That'll be big fun on the roads and fire-roads, but a little much on the trails.

I could easily see the 2-smoke being replaced with an e-bike for my use. Something light and agile for trails. Something more powerful with greater range for everything else.

50miles is not enough. 100 is, though.

If they put out a plated edirty with 100mile range and an equivalent spec to the Alta, I'd totally buy one. I don’t need all the power in the world with instant torque, so it doesnt seem that far to reach.
I hope, for their sake, they move past the 4cs forks by then.

I'm missing the cost benefit though. My 2 stroke was $1400 and does most things pretty effin great. I don't really care that much about noise. If anything I'd rather have it. MX 2 strokes on the pipe sound fukkin amazeballs.

The stealth factor is the only benefit. If you need it, it's worth a lot. If you don't it's worth nothing.

Ah. Sure. Cost wise used bikes will beat new every day. Add new, niche tech to the mix and the math gets even more ridiculous.

All of these e-bikes are 2nd bike/toys for now.

Add me to the list of guys that'd like to have an e-bike in my garage.

What about the drastically lower maintenance? That appeals to me.

I do almost nothing to the motor of my ktm. oil changes and filter cleaning. I guess that's a factor. But suspension, linkages, chains and sprockets are definitely what I maintain the most. That won't go away.

Good news! There are multiple operating modes available, if you don't mind loosing some peak power you can dial it back and get more range.

I know. I’m paying attention, we just haven’t cross certain benchmarks for range, performance, weight, and cost yet.

No electronic platform is either for that matter. Especially here in the northeast where cold kills batteries dead.

Well, kills lead acid batts dead if you let them freeze. My lithiums don't give a damn about the cold.

That said, the Alta is damn close to tempting me... it could likely replace my 300 XC-W easily. It's not quite race ready though, so it's not an option to replace my motard so... wallet stays closed for now.

The big thing for me for the Alta is, how do you recharge it at the MX track? Even if you find somewhere with power, how long is it going to take?

I don't want to be sitting around for 1-2 hours while my bike recharges. I guess you could buy a spare battery pack and swap it in, but...

    Re: iDirt

At the MX track, you plug it into a generator. The MXR is the fastest charging (again due to the change in batt chemistry) and they list it as being able to be fully charged in 1.5 hours from completely dead. I believe the expectation is that you won't fully flatten the batt in a moto if racing, so your recharge time won't be from fully dead thus shorter. On the flip side, it's supposed to be a less than 10 min job to swap batts if you want to go that route? The few dirt races I've been in have included a decent amount of down time, I think I'd be more impacted on practice days as there are more opportunities to ride. (Again, ignoring the tiny detail that there is no way I can rock that thing at full crank so... my batt usage would be just slightly less...)

The charge time is one of the reasons I say it's not a viable replacement for my sumo yet, as there I do think I can work the batt harder on the pavement sections, and at Boxshop depending on how many classes you run there can be little time between sessions.

I could maintain my gas engine for decades before the cost would catch up to me. Complete top end is $110 for factory Yamaha parts...

Quite a few people. They aren't far off with an MX 450 getting > $10K for almost all manufacturers and one that is street registerable even closer to the $15K mark
