Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
That 450 up here is gone. I just checked. It was a decent deal for 4bills.
If take the plate off the table the options open up for cheap fun. Most modern 250 2t with the right pipe and a flywheel weight will work in the woods for cheap giggles. Not as sweet as a true woods bike but if you're not hard core riding all the time who gives a fuck I say..
Not sure I even want to mention this but... One could get a ahem KLX250S and ride that shitbox with a shit eating grin. I think I just saw another one on the CL for under 2k :poke:

Fuck a klx250 and their weird bars-in-the-lap geometry.
And Colin, I might stab you in the eye. A 300 is in no way, shape, or form overkill any more than a small bore is underkill. It's simply a different style of ride...More torque at lower rpms. Despite it being like 2% heavier, it's still just as easy on the body. Which, if you think woods riding is easy on the body, means you're going too slow.
Put your safety goggles on.

Klx is a turd as much as a dr is.
Kick stands are still for pussies too. When I didn't have wolverine burns I just rested my bike against those things teaching towards the sky with roots that are all over the woods. Think they are called trees.
Kick stands are for pussies.

450 4-stroke woods models or 200-300cc 2-stroke!!!
(not me, but generally...) remember 2 strokes suck on th' streets...and Tacoma/trucking the bike is just as time intensive as a track day
nvm...go exc350 or 450 thumper, definitely plated for your mid-week jaunts

What's my biggest weakness? Sometimes I love my KDX220 too much. It lacks power on the ice, but the noise fools you into feeling fast. I would most definitely never sumo it, or road ride it more than a few miles at less than 50. Reeds, leaner jetting, and a pipe made mine fun. I'm okay with the stock forks, I did put springs in for motocross. I'm not a good enough rider to need a better machine, and in the meantime I have much fun learning on the relic. It wheelies just off idle, no weedwacker powerband here. The 6 speed is nice compared to my WTF 4 speed YZ450F. It has not "needed" any repair in the year I've had it. I did fork seals while changing the springs to fix a weep. I changed sprockets and chain to gear it taller for ice. I put a pipe and silencer on for looks and to drop a few pounds.

Maybe I came off too harsh on the 300. 'Tis also a fine choice too, methinks. Really any of the 200-300cc KTM 2ts are going to be big fun and easy to own. Truth told I've had half-thoughts about wanting for a 250. For a guy my size the extra punch would be welcomed. But the 200 just treats me right... and is paid for.
All I was trying to say is one does not require the larger machines. I have met plenty who think you do. Ie the littler bikes are beginner bikes or some such. It just ain't true. The 200 has all the kit the big bikes do and, as you say, is just a style thing. Ditto for the KDX; she'll getcha where you wanna be, more or less.
Just get on it. Fall is burning, yo.

Theothersean listened to my similar requirements and said, "Buy a WR250R." So I did. It's a terrific bike. Pricing is on the high side of the steet legal 250's but you get a lot of good stuff for that $$.

But he already owns a V-Strom.

Love the 220 KDX. kinda wished i kept it but i needed the room and knee healing time.

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
This topic seems impossible. Dirtbikes have so much variety. It's hard to know if you will love or hate a bike til you spend some time on it. Test rides always feel great. Living with a dirtbike is a different story. Everyone has different tastes/needs. Advise is all over the map.
Sorry if that's not helpful... lol

Get a Titled WR450F and dual sport it out....

Edit: Retracted offer to sell 2stroke, he wants a thumper

If the bike moves sans ice wheels, let me know. :D

Put me in line #2 for the wheels.

I know what you mean.
I really did enjoy the CR125 as a woods bike once it was sprung for me. But, I end up liking most bikes I ride because I just make the most of them. Hell, I raced/trackday'd an EX500 for what, 8 years? :spit:
I'm thinkin thumper this time.

Price is decent, though it def needs tires. Could check off a few boxes for me though.
WR450 would be better, but those tend to be pricey from what I've found.

No pigs, just the opposite. The 426 motor was brutally fast.

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
Never felt a 4 stroke wind up so fast until I rode the yz426f...oh lawd
I don't picture you as a bargain basement Dirtbike guy....would go newer

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
Old 4 strokes are a bear to start. Requires a routine. And good luck when they're hot haha.
If you're going to go 4 joke make sure it has e start.

THIS is solid advice.

I had the same bike. It's a powerhouse, and about as reliable as a dirt bike can be... but it's heavy and as mentioned, there is a trick to starting it. Having a somewhat small build, I don't think you will like it.
Only advice I have to offer is, up your budget and get something newer, a pumpkin is your best bet IMHO.

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
For the amount of time I'll be spending on this thing for the next few years, I'd be willing to tradeoff e-start for something I can ride from trail to trail.
Budget won't be stretched any further. I'm not expecting a ton of use out of it. Maximizing the types of riding (trail/dual-sport/ice/etc) will help get the most bang for the buck in my current breeder situation. My free time involves an hour here, a half day there. I can't justify rollin down $5k on a nice KTM 350. Would I love one? Sure would.
If I'm going to get a 2 stroke, I'll likely just end up finding a $1500 KDX and call it a day.
