Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
To keep things in perspective, I get 1 day off a week (Sunday) to do all housework/yardwork, spend time with the wife/kid/dog, do vehicle maintenance, etc.
I don't have the time I used to. I wouldn't get $5k of use out of a $5k bike. I don't disagree that they are head and shoulders above the older gen bikes, but I got constraints and I'm stickin to them.
Some riding on a bike that does everything OK is way better than much less riding on a more specialized single purpose weapon.

If you're going to go 4 joke make sure it has e start.
Or make sure you know the difference between a decompressor and a hot start lever so you don't kill yourself at the end of the front straight wall desperately trying to hot start the bike to no avail...

I'm kinda lost on what you want, but I've been riding my WR250F most of this year and I'm pretty happy with it. Estart, kickstand, suspension's decent, power's enough for me. Wish it lugged just a little better, but that's a nitpick because it isn't bad. And the top end makes up for it. Under <300cc can be plated via VT, which should be enough for you up your area for short trips between trails. And you can probably find one in the $2k-ish range.
I've only had a short spin on a KDX, but that seems like it would fit too. CRF250X seems like it'd fit too.

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
You say you're okay with a kick-only, big boy 4t until you follow a set of better riders into single track at clough, fall down or stall the machine a gazillion times and are dead-dick tired. Not from the actual ride, but from dead lifting a machine or kicking that big-ol' thing over again in 90-degree heat. And again. And again. And again.
And you can't (or won't) afford a de-luxe modern e-start mega-thumper. So there you are.
Do the $1500 lightweight KDX. Enter the equation with an expectation and have it meet that expectation.
Save the dirt roads for the v-strom.

Wait, you offered to sell him the 250 you just setup for yourself?! :scratchhead:

Yep!
Ive just been riding dirt so poorly and with such lame endurance lately ive been thinking about calling it a career (again; already did it once for 10 years!)
...should be able to handle ice riding though and should try hatfield mccoy too. Part of the problem is that a lot of people I ride with are fast experts both woods and mx so its more demoralizing (haha)
+1 to everyone saying avoid 4strokes w/o electric start for off road riding.
EXCEPT if they have Rekluse
Been there, done that, never again

That CRF450X I posted earlier could hit all the possible checkboxes, short of a Baja Designs lighting kit to get blinkers. It's got the magic button and everything.
I don't know man. I don't know. I'm not trying to be difficult. Being able to head down my road and get to trails without trailering would be huge.
For what it's worth, I rarely stalled out an unmodified 125 MX engine at Clough. But I do see your point, when I did have to kick it over, it was never in an easy spot. It's ok, the WR I called about looks like someone else's headache anyways. If it'll be a 4 stroke, it'll have a button.
For legal dirt riding with a non-plated bike, it's an hour and a half each way just to get to Clough from my house. I don't think I'd be doing much riding there, maybe 1x a month at best. That's a whole day thing. Just can't swing that with the wee one. That's my hangup with the KDX. Some of them are plated, but not a lot.
I'm difficult. I know.

Buy the 450x or get a plated wr450!!
The wr250's on street ain't no ninja...250 ain't enough...
Although that plated WR 02 yz250
Everyone should try a ride on a 1999-03 yz250 smoker...such a strong, tractable, good size smoker...wide ratio trans is a common swap and really helps for street!

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
Then try that same "tractable" bike on a rough MX track and find out just how far over your head you really are. A few good flying W runs through the whoops with the bike yanking your arms out of you shoulders, or an unintentional superman off a 50 ft plus jump with a flat landing should do it.

Ha! So true.
I'm using a 125 for woods and occasional MX. Couldn't be happier. My 450 was an animal, but as mentioned for the 250 2T they can be exhausting to rip on. Or worse. However, I don't remember mine being hard to start once you had the procedure down. I rarely used the hot start.

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
True...not the best for MX...but for trail and occasional street (not iglu) fun!!

You make is sound so bad... :deathslap:
A 250 2t is just like a 125 only for men... Lol

Re: I'm dumb. Y'all know it. So make me be less dumb. KDX? CRF? KTM?
It's great... for experts. You forget the beginner phase when you grew up with those bikes.

I've owned a YZ250 previously.

But did it have a kick stand?

Kickstands are for straight up gangster-mack's who spend lots of time waiting for people who removed them to catch up.

Lol...
Sometimes I forget that not everyone started riding when they were 7.
I spent a lot of hours on a XR75 with bald tires and no rear brake.
