For $800, I would try and verify that it actually belongs to him. Especially if you intend to plate it.

Oh, it does. He's has it for years.
He did run into a "snafu" 5 or 6 years ago when he bought it with the title it had. Swapped frames. Now it's listed as a YZ400 with a clean title.
Like I said, it's cheap. I wouldn't expect it to be mint for that kinda money. Also came to an agreement with him "If I can't reg it legally in MA, you take it back, that's it".
He's a close enough acquaintance that I'm confident he wouldn't fuck with me on that.

Ha! well to be fair, i wasnt exactly nice to it. when i bought it i shouldve done a top end and gone through the whole thing since i had no history on it and was probably at least the 4th owner. even the guy i bought it off of hadnt done anything.
so after 3 years of only putting gas in it, it finally blew. now im working on replacing everything from swingarm bearings to cables to possibly even the banged up radiators. im still on the fence about doing a bottom end. it wont be cheap but i will at least have a baseline. something i shouldve done when i bought it.

It is a part of the exhaust cam. It holds a button out that keeps one of the exhaust valves slightly open until the engine spins fast enough to fling out the centrifugal weight on the sprocket end and retract the button. I put one in my WR400 and it instantly improved my life. No more theft deterrent decomp lever!

I'm hoping to find a bike that I can ride once in a while without having to do major work.
If needs be, I'll wait till tax time and buy something nicer.
Something about a nice narrow light 2 smoke appeals to me, provided I can justify it's abilities vs a plateable streetable (for short distances) heavier thumper.

With that attitude a plated smoker may be sufficient if your street time is short...I rode mine 20 miles each way at 70-80mph all rung out...wheelies at 70mph
Just truck it if you need to go farther than a few miles
The 426 can pressure test with a decompression lever...just do the routine with the meter plugged in...I wouldn't bother. Just kick it over and test for feel and running status.
issue is that hole is really hard to get into
For 8 Hundo make sure it runs right and doesn't need much work... don't make it a $3,500 project with a resale of $1,000
Careful with the "he won't screw me over" to save a buck...I've been screwed over plenty of times under that premise.

Don't be a pussy.
Go buy a '17 350 or 500excf.
You want it, you might as well get it. And since you'll have spent so much on one, you might guilt yourself into riding it a bunch more.

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
There you go!
Although a 250 XC-W (2-stroke) or even a 300 with a plate would still work too and might be a little more budget and low-maint friendly. Honestly I may have oversold how horrid my 200 is on the street too. It isn't that bad. I mean I've done 100 mile days on it and pushed it to 55 indicated.
I'm having a moment and strongly considering keeping the plate on it (had considered canceling the street reg) and selling off the beloved DRZ. Too many oil changes in that there garage. If that happens the damned 200 will be my funabout. I may even use the DRZ proceeds to finance another set of wheels with something that won't melt when it sees tarmac.
Yeah, I'm getting cold on that thing.

EDIT: oops, was responding to Maximex, but sounds like you're wising up. speaking of getting cold on stuff, can we go back to 2-strokes yet?
