If you look down, you go down. That may be fun at an orgy, but it sucks on a bike

Do it. Doing a good dirt ride is every bit as much fun as a track day.

I usually spend a hour or 2 before or after (mostly after but one or the other) washing it down and giving things a once over. The chain needs attention every ride, clean and lube it often. Air filters are also on top of the list...and frequent oil changes. It's more maintinance than a sportbike but I also think offroad riding is MUCH more fun than street riding so it's worth it.

If you can find a bike with a street title, you'll double your legal riding areas

On a track, you repeat the same obtacles and turns over and over. On a trail, you may not repeat anything all day. Track has no roots or rocks, trail has no jumps or whoops(comparatively). Both styles are fun, but they are quite a bit different in terms of ideal bike and set-up.

On a track you want explosive power, and suspension that is stiffer at the beginning of the stroke softer at the middle/bottom. Trail you want smooth power, and suspension that is softer at the beginning of the stroke, and gets stiffer towards the middle/bottom. So, pretty much dead opposites.

Its just like a sportbike; depends on what you get.

If you buy yourself a KTM, you will have a better suspended, faster, and generally cooler bike. But you will do more maintanence, the parts are a bit spendier, etc.

If you buy a jap bike, it will do most things well, and be a little easier on the maintenance and parts. I have a DRZ400; I beat it mercilessly and have really done very little. In 2500 miles, I have done about 10 oil changes (mostly due to time, not mileage), and one valve adjustment.

They are all pretty easy to work on, as they have no fairings and only one cylinder.

I never had a dirt bike until a couple of years ago, I always rode street bikes. I have considerably more fun on my dirt bike, and it rarely ever puts my driver's license in jeopardy.

Oh yes, and +1 on what has been said about street legal bikes. Unless you want to ride motocross, get something that can be street registered. It will open up miles of riding, and save you many headaches.

im thinking of getting a dirt bike

    thanks for the info paul.

I see someone selling a KLX 250 (for $1500) on my way to work for the last couple of weeks. But when I research it, it seems that most of the trails are located in state parks and alot of them are banning 2 stokes for noise.

And you can always convert it to be a motard.
