    Is this anyone here

on a snowmobile trail on posted private property off Chestnut Hill Road in Farmington, NH

not helping the cause, as member of our local Conservation Commission and chairman of the Towns Economic Development Committee, I am working on a plan to open some trails and town roads tom wheeled OHRVs. I am having very positive response and input from other town officials (my town and other towns as well), NH Dept of Resources and Economic Development (DRED), NH F&G and most landowners to eventually connect with the trail system in northern NH

Mistaken for a class 6? Bike looks plated.

Interested in details re: your trail plans. You contacted the regional clubs? ie MVTR. Looks like seacoast trail riders is dead?!

    Re: Is this anyone here

not sure, without going to the location, the property may not even be posted properly

it's not a matter of if the rider is legally trespassing, its a matter of pissing a land owner off and when we go to ask for permission to open the trail to wheeled vehicles, not getting it

if it's where I think it is, no way it could be mistaken for class VI with a closed orange snowmobile gate to get to that point, the person that posted this photo on facebook only owns 5 acres and only 300 feet of trail crosses his property. some Class VI road can be gated (if they were closed subject to gates and bars) but cannot be locked

working on contacting clubs, both ATV and snowmobile, so far everyone likes the idea, but is not willing to put any effort. I see OHRVs as a good way to improve the local economy, looking to get the state to turn the old Textron parking lot in Farmington as an ATV park & ride, its right on the old RR bed trail system and Rt 11 (Class I state highway) and from there eventually connect with the Gorham end of the northern NH trails

Yes, it is a big ambitious project, I have our local legislators, newly elected state senator and newly elected executive councilor on board with the project

In general, what is the deal with gates that are not locked? There is one such gate along the well-established enduro loop in Pachaug.

I don't know shit about the way snowmobile trails work. So help me out - what's wrong with riding the sled trail? I'd assume don't chew it up and we all can be friends. But I'd also have figured if the land owner agreed to let snowmobiles pass through, kinda the same thing to let a bike pass through when there's no snow.

    in general, I don't know,

in New Hampshire when a road is closed and turned into a Class VI road, they are still open to the public but not maintained (with hwy dept funds, towns can still spend civil defense or safety dept funds for maintenance but generally only maintained by landowners along the road) If the are just closed, land owners cannot put up gates, but if they are closed subject to gates & bars, then land owners can put up gates but not lock them, back in the day, farmers many times used the Class VI roads as cattle lanes to pastures, if you see a closed gate, you can open it and pass thru but must close it afterward

gates going onto private property or roads is a whole different story

sled trails are only open to with minimum 4" snow, many trails go thru wetlands that can only be traversed when the ground is frozen

permission for sleds does not mean permission for wheeled vehicles

    Re: Is this anyone here

My MO is that if I see a sign with verbiage like "unmaintained ... at own risk" then I feel good to go.
    Locked gate? Turn around.
Unlocked gate? Very rare. Seen one once. Proceed, but close gate behind.

State/town parks tend to have gated rec and fire roads. Some are open to traffic, even on both sides, but not open to through traffic of any kind. It gets weird in some places.

Got into a nice argument with my father recently regarding a bit that I swear is a class 6 public way, but he swears is now SELT land surrendered by the town, now closed. Sign still says "unmaintained, proceed at own risk". So if they did get the town to give up the way, they've done a shitty job communicating that.

Basically what I'm saying here is that I see both sides. Sometimes its very hard to know what's legal and what's not. As with the recent landowner actions with Clough, sometimes what was perfectly legal and cool one day is off limits, closed the next thanks to a change in land owner. Can be very tough to keep up.

Photo does not look like your average shit-head looking to dig trenches with his MX bike. I maintain; maybe an honest mistake?! Maybe.

my guess is that it is still a Class VI road, SELT is very good about getting out and changing signage. Only the governing body can close or abandon a road. in most towns that is vote of town meeting in March, some towns however (Durham is one I believe) are governed by Town Council, and cities are governed by City Council, so it could be done much easier with a public hearing and vote of the council

I agree, doesn't look like a shithead trying to dig trenches, just a shithead that is to lazy to research if its a permissible trail

yes I do, I now know that the trail is posted at all the entrances to the property as well as along the edges of the trail to keep snowmobilers on the trail when it is open to snowmobiles, posted signs at the entrances come down when it is open to snowmobiles

Maybe the quote below is the source of your confusion.

If this is someone here, and they're dumb enough to post up admitting it, then the ensuing replies would have this thread in the running for Thread Of The Year. Big possibilities!

I would not rely on that list, is has at least one private road in my town on the list and is missing several class VI roads in my town and surrounding towns

Check to see if it's legally considered a snowmobile in your state also, there are restrictions on that.
