    KDX All Grown Up

Had to share this over here. Guy on KDX rider did a full frame off on his '96 and the result is pretty stunning. If my winter project can turn out half this well I'll be in good company.

Thread said he powder coated the frame. I think its plastics and front end that really make the conversion.

If we all based our motorcycle purchase and modifications decisions on good financial decision making ideals we'd all be riding Wee Storms home for dinner at 6 followed by a bi-weekly missionary intercourse interaction with our high school sweetheart who we married after her father's blessing.

Nope, this is a KDX chassis. Just a KX fork conversion with plastics etc.

    Re: KDX All Grown Up

Dirt bikes are neccesarily much more disposable than street bikes, IMO. Not so much due to age (although tech advances ARE a huge deal if we are talking 10-20 years old), but due to hours and level of abuse they've taken. Because of the pounding to everything from the chassis to the motor and transmission, it seems like pissing in the wind, to me, to keep pouring money into one that's been hammered. Powdercoat, polish, buy new plastic and bearings and top ends all you want; the thing will still be LOOSE.

Said another way, except for certain rareish interesting dirtbikes (like the first mono shock, or last two stroke 500, etc) most times I see an old dirtbike that someone poured a shit ton of time and money into, I think "looks good, but what a waste"

    Totally different with street bikes...

I wouldn't scoff at the chance to whip a hooked up kdx. Aside from the weird seating position, I'd probably love it.

looks awesome, nice attention to detail everywhere without being gaudy, but i'm bummed he didn't include any of the orig purple. would have been sweet to keep some of that '96 flava with splashes of purple mixed in. (top of seat / shroud graphic / hoses / fork guard graphic / anodized hubs)

    Re: KDX All Grown Up

Thing that bums me out about these great restorations is that all it takes is one or two rides on a sloppy trail and it visually takes a huge hit. Yes the bike can be cleaned up and made pretty but the scratches and imperfections are there. Similar feelings about brand new dirtbikes. Such a shame to spend what a new bike can cost and within 2 or 3 rides it doesn't look all that different from a bike that someone has owned for a year or two.

do not agree, scars add character. neglect is a different story. most dirt bikes are neglected... because it costs time and money between rides. (not much, really)

    Re: KDX All Grown Up

Agree that the scars add character and there is a difference between neglect and some good old wear and tear. Just bikes never look as good as the day they roll of the sales floor once they've been ridden on a muddy trail system.

As far as SoCal riding goes, I'm making the assumption, quite possibly incorrectly so, that they don't have the muddy, swill hole, root and rock infested trails we have here in the NE. If I was riding on trails where my bike only got dusty than I would keep it looking close to new as well.

I have to say, I'm truly torn between a 300 RR and a 300 xc-w. I got to take a whip on JC's with fresh suspenders sprung for about my weight and it was like cheating. Literally felt like a jet ski planing up when I twisted it. Giggity.

    Re: KDX All Grown Up

Interesting - The first pic appears to have a desert (top end) pipe, the 2nd pic appears to have a woods (low-mid) pipe. They are easy to differentiate once mounted by how close they come to the lower corner of the shroud. Having been thoroughly in love with KDX's for over 10 years, I would have kept the desert pipe.
