    Klim jumps the shark

Holy Crap! Just got the Klim gear catalog and they have a jacket that lists at 1300 dollars, and get this... the pants are 870!!! WTF are they thinking in the marketing dept? Something like, "what's the most you would pay for a jacket? 700 dollars. OK, Let's DOUBLE it."

For that money, those pants better feel pretty damned good when I put them on.

Well hmk needs to start producing dirty/adventure gear then.

I just looked at them on the web. There's no autosuck built into those trousers, I can't fathom why that stuff is so expensive.

"they" have been doing this for a while now with alternative sports. Seems like they are testing the ceiling. Sad thing is, they will prob sell a lot of it. Despite the economic downturn, I have seen people wearing/riding boutiquey items

    Re: Klim jumps the shark

You must be talking about the Klim Adventure Rally suit. Which has been around for a while now, by the way.

I know some people who own or have used it, and they all say it's worth every penny. The materials are super-high-end, hence the price, and apparently the suit really does stay 100% waterproof while venting well and providing excellent protection.

There's definitely a market for that super-tech, high-end gear. Rukka and Aerostich make some really expensive stuff too. Doesn't mean they've jumped the shark, just that they're offering some really good product.

    Re: Klim jumps the shark

I don't doubt that it's good, but Patagonia and other high end tech gear companies make similar products for half the price. They are the HIGH end of the scale, and they pretty much invented most of this stuff.

What you have at Klim is an exclusivity guarantee for rich beemer types. The riff raff won't be wearing this stuff, that's for sure!

from a MotorcycleUSA.com gear review last summer:

Riders who like the idea of adventure rather than actually getting dirt on their motorcycle will be fine. All others should focus on the rest of Klim's riding gear, which is much more impressive.

    Re: Klim jumps the shark

Yeah I saw those 870 dollar pants, but not the jacket. That's insane.

I also saw a couple pairs of Klim pants on closeout for under 80 bucks... might have to buy a pair

Helmet on closeout, too... just wish I could try it on first. I can't bring myself to buying helmets I don't try on before hand.

    Re: Klim jumps the shark

P'gucci and Arc'teryx pants run near and over $500 retail, as do the high-end jackets, and as much as I like 'em, I wouldn't expect much in abrasion-resistance (and they definitely don't have CE-spec armor). Add those features in, figure that the market for truly high-end moto gear is probably even smaller than the market for high-end outdoor gear, and I can see where Kilm and Rukka end up costing as much as they do.

    Re: Klim jumps the shark

I am actually sitting next to one of their suits at the moment. It is not cheap but appears to be virtually unbreakable. That being said, this suit is more for the hardcore adventure rider that is going to put this thing through its paces. Also it was designed ground up to me a motorcyclists suit. Is patagonia even armored? If you ride street there is no need to have one. But if you are a paris to dakar type of guy I hear you can't do better

Wow, Your sitting next to 2K. Grab it and run! That is the cost of a full zoot custom made set of vansons. I still think it's over priced by 40 to 50 percent.

I'm not sold on the new crop of ultra-high-cost purpose designed suits or 2 part suits. I had the Rev'it Infinity suit - ground up design, $1300 or so MSRP.
Leaked like a sieve, unusable pockets, other problems. And that's after apparently rigorous field testing.

I am wearing the same moldy, smelly, torn and ripped shit I have been for about 10 years now. I just can't see spending that kind of loot on stuff that is going to get smelly, moldy, torn, ripped and dirty.

It's important to keep in mind that the Klim Adventure Rally suit and others similar to it are not intended for motocross or trail riding, they're intended for long-distance adventure touring or rally racing. Big difference in what kind of gear is appropriate to wear and what sort of money to expect to spend on it.

I jumped a shark once. Turns out they don't carry wallets, what a waste of time.
