    Red face KTM help

I think I want to go back to the dirt possible this summer. I am really want to have a KTM. I have had Honda's and Yamaha's.

I am looking at the 300 xc-w or the 500. (I will prob buy new or should I not...)

I am not a mechanic and I know that 2 strokes are easier maintenance wise.
But I need help picking for longer woods rides and maybe tracks . I have only ridding 4 stroke in the past.

    I am not starting a 2stroke vs 4stroke shit show .

    Thanks,

    moX

300 all the way. You said woods and track, and no mention of wanting much (if any) streetability, so that's my answer.

    well, I'm no help!

but I'll set it up for everyone else -

    1.) how tall/fat are you?
2.) where do you want to ride it and how much? (ie. 80% woods/20% track?)
3.) do you need street plate?
4.) what is your mechanical ability?

    300.
    Again.

It's got power for days if you want to wind it up.
It's got torque for days if you want to lug it along.
In the long run I think it's a cheaper option to live with, and easier for sure to work on.

Ok. cool thanks for the feedback. Next, Should Buy the bitch new, it seems like people don't let go of these bad boys easily. I don't mind buying new would be sexy.

Also side note dealer to go too. closest to me is cycles 128. Buying from them how is exp? I have only dealt with parts and service there lol.

    Re: KTM help

    I was a 2-stroke snob until I rode a friends 500 exc thumper. I liked it, a lot!

If it's an option, I'd always buy new...nothing like bring home that new bike and getting it dirty for the first time. That, and you'll know exactly how well it was/is/wasn't maintained.
As for places to buy, i'd shop around. I've heard good things about Cliffs, I've also heard people walk away from Motorsports nation in Plainfield Ct feeling like they stole the bikes, they get them so cheap. One thing I know for sure with KTM, there's a lot of bargain room in the MSRP price

I went through the same question in my head this December. I got this from Cliff's. They hooked me up and know their stuff, it's worth going down just to chat. I don't have a guy love relationship there like Chip, but it is easy to see why the shop is so well liked. KTM help-img_2062-2-jpg

    Re: KTM help

Cliffies is top notch, I wouldn't buy from anywhere else. But if I lived in Salem, I'd give Cycles 128 a shot. There's nothing like establishing a relationship with a dealership close to home. I'd go 300 as well, but I wouldn't discount a 250 either. It'll do the job, and can always become a 300 down the line.

I ride a 2010 KTM 200 XC-W and love it. You can always find "used" bikes that people bought on a whim and brought them home and rode em a couple times and the wife wants it out of the garage. And XC-W's have hour meters. I want a 300 XC myself and Edelmanns in Troy NY has great prices and no sales tax for out of state sales. Just can't get a useless sticker in Massachusetts. I use mine in Maine. 5000 yes five thousand miles of mapped trails that they actually want you and your money to come and enjoy. That sales tax money you would waste in Massachusetts will buy you a cheap trailer too.

I don't know that the sticker is useless. I ride 10-20 times in the Mass forest network per year. And, you need to pay taxes for a plate and there are a few events per year that require plates.

When out in Ma or NH do they even check for that shit? Do I really need plates or just the registered off road sticker?

I can't comment on MA, but in NH they definitely check for your sticker. Many local police departments near state sponsored riding areas receive funding from the bureau of trails and the tree police to help with enforcement. On busy weekends, it's not uncommon to run into a checkpoint where they look for your sticker. In NH, the proceeds from the sticker is used to maintain the trail system so if you have a street legal bike, you need both a plate and a sticker.

You will need plates if you intend to do anything more than cross a public way. NH has specific laws in place to allow you plate a dirt bike that was never originally intended to be run on the street so the overall process up here is very easy (even for 2 strokes). You will have a substantially more difficult time accomplishing the same in MA unless you start with a street legal model like the EXC.

    Re: KTM help

i went through this a couple years ago. thought for sure i wanted a 4 stroke. these guys talked me into a 300 2 stroke. i havent regretted it. the torque it makes off idle is inconceivable. i mean, a 2 stroke shouldnt do that and yet it does.
im 250# and i generally just put it in 2nd and lug my way around the woods.

After much contemplation, I bought a used 200 XC last fall. Thus far I'm only half in love with it. I expect to fall the other half of the way this summer when I actually get to ride it in the woods.

they do in MA - this is what I experienced @ Hodges - a ranger drives up in the middle of the morning or afternoon, walks up to your bike looking for the plate (now it's a fork sticker) that's current, then leaves.

at least MA/NH doesn't have a red/green sticker riding season...
