Re: Kurlon has a dirt project

I just put the order in, including a new swingarm pivot bolt instead of trying my luck on an ebay unit... no road racing for me this year, but I should have something that will keep me occupied right through the winter so it works. No idea if it'll be viable by Stimilon but I'm going to try.

I repeat, you're all evil bastards.

Re: Kurlon has a dirt project

Scored a tank and side panels off ebay for short money. Tank has a small repair where it got gouged on the side at one point in it's life, but it's holding gas, and has 4 good captive nuts, so absolute worst case I use them to repair my existing eyesore of a tank.

I even found a company making graphics kits for this antique!

Saturday I'll be confirming that my crazy order has been put in, and maybe getting my swingarm repaired. I'm tempted to pick up an air drill, chuck up a green scrubby and try and 'clean' it... is it painted or just raw aluminum?

Most likely just raw aluminum. Sounds like a fun project.

    score...congrats on the find!

and who makes the graphics? and how much? I've been piecing together a custom scheme but it's been slim picking since nobody makes them for my bike anymore

lrrs got it...swing arm should be cleanable

edit: Even if the swing arm looks fugly, because it has so many scratches, it's ok. But if you still want it to look good, you can always stick decals on top, for under $20

(YES, I know my chain guides are currently MIA...I lost all the hardware when I was getting the swing arm bearings replaced)

    I'm getting numbers next

Nada at the moment. I've got a tank/shrouds/numberplates coming from eBay, and a massive Parts Unlimited / Yamaha OEM order that I'm waiting on, I'm going to try and verify it's been placed this evening. Other than that the bike has sat partially dismantled with no progress.

Oh, and I was wrong on the graphics kits being available. They let you specify a 1992 YZ250, but they don't actually have a template to make them... bah.

One jumbo order placed yesterday, looks like most of the PU stuff will be in by this weekend meaning I'll be changing bearings and bushings like a fool Saturday.

I wouldn't say no... : ) I do need a new set of bars, the ones that are on there are a touch bent, and rusting badly under the throttle. New bars will be much easier to deal with compared to my currently plan, crowbar and a brillo pad on my drill for de-rusting duty...

Swingarm, linkage and shocked pulled in anticipation of parts this weekend. That bottom linkage bolt to the frame is a royal PITA. Looks like I need a new chain guard for the swingarm, the current one is a bit... er... thin in spots. Like, negative thickness? : )

When you go to remove the shock bearings, clean them before you push out the bearings. Some of them use a small wire clip to retain the bearing in the shock that really make life hell when you don't see it before hand.

Re: Kurlon has a dirt project

Only bits and pieces of the PU order arrived today, rear wheel bearings were the only thing I could really do anything with today. I was able to remove the existing bearings by hand, one side just fell out. At the suggestion of a friend, I used a sharp chissel to stake the hub where the bearings sit and used red loctite on the outside of the bearings when installing. I suspect this will be that hub's last set of bearings. Hopefully the rest of the parts will arrive soon.

I got a complete gasket/seal set from Moose also, no exhaust gasket or oring so I'll need to start a second Yamaha OEM order to chase those down. Kinda funny seeing fewer gaskets in the kit than my pitbike kitss have...

Re: Kurlon has a dirt project

Tank and plastics arrived, and based on my wife's description, bars have too (Thanks DBB!). All of that gets to wait while I redo wiring. The harness is a mess of bad splices, crazy amounts of electrical tape and my all time favorite - wire nuts. I'll be going to town shortly with a soldering iron and heatshrink.

The headlight is dead also, it uses MR16 interior low voltage lighting bulbs?! Er, yeah, no thanks. Anyone got a line on a cheap dual sport headlight assembly that uses a proper exterior rated bulb? Looks like the stator is good for 40w max so a single bulb setup should do the trick.

(Actually I found some LED MR16 replacements that have my curiosity piqued, but I'm not spending that kind of cash on a light just yet. Just need it to work well enough for the 'headlight' class.)

Re: Kurlon has a dirt project

pretty sure you can have a smashed out headlight for the headlight class aha.

ps- I saw a 90 or 89 yz250 swingarm on thumpertalk for like 20 bucks if you might need that.

Re: Kurlon has a dirt project

I'll have to chase that swingarm down just in case. The only issue I know of with mine at the moment is one stripped out chain adjuster, but I got thinking about it and I don't see that as an issue if I can't heli-coil it. I can just double nut it and it'll still do it's job of preventing the axle from sliding forward, it'll just have the potential of falling out if the axle slides the other way... : )

I also ended up buying another rear brake caliper off ebay, the piston on this one had been ground by something at some point, at a bad angle. That causes the pads to wear unevenly, not that I can coax the pins into coming out so I could replace said pads, piston, and seals if I wanted. Ebay caliper with new pads was cheaper than OEM seals so I'll keep my fingers crossed that this one is worth a damn, if not I'll combine the two to make one.

Boy that looks a LOT purdier than my sorry pile. If repairing mine requires any heavy lifting I'm jumping all over that one, thanks!

Edit: Oh, forgot one other find, I need to weld the subframe, cracked on one side... d-oh! : )
