    ORV registration in MA

So, I hope to have the YZ up and running soon. I'd like to get out on the trails etc but from what I know, I have to register the bike. i found
    http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dle/instructionspage.htm#ATV
but it doesn't give me many details. The bike is an 82, i don't have a title or bill of sale. What options do I have?

Yeah...the bill of sale won't be scrutinized much... just whip something up and keep the $$ low since you'll have to pay tax first.

I believe you get 30 days for sales tax. I know thats the case for street bikes but I guess better safe then sorry.

I just renewed mine for another two years Took all of 2 minutes

I believe that a few odd people had troubles with bikes that were never registered by owners from Mass.

He just needs to do the online tax payment through the website and show the previous owners Conneticut address so that they know he doesn't need to make up any un-paid mass sales tax. Print the receipt for the taxes and take it to the fish cops to register the bike.

Ya know, I knew we forgot to do something!

I can make one up and sign it, then mail it over to you, just get me the VIN and whatnot.

so, from my understanding the VIN should be 17 digits, I only see 9 stamped on the frame. any thoughts?

It is whatever is on the frame. If that's 9 digits, then it's 9 digits!

    Not according to "Detective Idontknowmyassfrommyelbow"

Attempted to register it today, the girl at the desk called a detective, who "called Yamaha" supposedly. According to the detective, Yamaha laughed at him. he then proceeded to tell me where I could find the VIN on the engine. he could have cared less when I told him I broke the engine down to the case and cleaned every square inch of it with a toothbrush and the only number that is on the engine matches the frame. so i left the registry empty handed.

i have no idea what to do now. what is the fine for being caught without a plate? i'm thinking i may just ride it keeping all my paperwork with me and hope that i get stopped. at least then i can show him i have attempted to get it registered but they wouldn't let me, but if they can find me a 17 digit number on the bike, i'll gladly register it.

    No old reg exists, but...

I Just called Yamaha, they confirmed that 17 digit vin's were not used until 1983. The first 3 digits of my vin, 5X5, confirm it's a YZ250. Just called the registry again and escalated the call to the manager there, waiting on a call back now.

They have an officer look at the bike to make sure the number is not altered and its not stolen.

    Re: ORV registration in MA

so, after a couple weeks (granted it would have been quicker if i was more aggressive) i have a plate. the officer called me today, gave the okay, and told me who to talk to at the registry. i was a little pissed in the beginning of this process, but i did come to realize that even though these guys control who gets plates, they can't be expected to know everything about every bike, etc. in the end i have to applaud them. it would have been really easy for them to stall me up for months but he didn't.

in any event, the 82 is legal! (in MA anyways)

congrats! now it's time to make good use of those forty beans!

I was thinking about tagging the XR80r when I came across this message:

does anyone know if the state is picky about mounting (and "displaying") the plate on the back?

I doubt the XR80r ever came with any OEM rear plate mounting, so it would either have to go on like a-sportbike-with-a-fender-eliminator (aka L-brackets) or just bolt to the front number plate where it would be secure.

I saw a few riders with their tag facing the sky, bolted to their rear fender; think that would be cool?

Yup, you can ziptie it right to the back fender.
