    Re: Perris MX in Cali

Hah, I love all the riders getting off the track or hiding off line to get out of the crazy man's way.

I also love how he actually stopped to act as a temp flagger for the bike that was down, very cool.

So dumb question, jumping big jumps as an accomplishment, is it a balls thing to hit the big jumps, or is there some advanced technique you need to hit bigger jumps than little ones?

    Re: Perris MX in Cali

    Yea both!

Technically the same technique you use on a midsize jump carried over to a big jump, just you're in the air longer so any mistakes are amplified. For instance I took off one time over the finish line jump and didn't get my weight forward over the bike as I took off (you're in the 'back seat' driving traction up the face...) and as a result I did the classic HOLY SHIT HUGE WHEELIE IN MIDAIR the entire time, way up, way long time, and it's just scary as shit. I hit back wheel first on the backside with the front way up and monster trucked it out. In midair I yelled AH CRAP loud enough that some old timer came over to me after and went 'yea I heard that... hahaha' - Pro guys pull the clutch in and tap the rear brake to drop the front in situations like that, but that's pro's. I've asked a number of riders better than me if they do the rear brake trick, and they all say no, just body position.

Nuts is the other factor. The truth is even when a big jump is a table, it fucking HURTS to go all the way without making the backside. You can 'mid' jump it and land halfway distance pretty easy every time, and you think 'oh it's only another 10' further, no problem!' but you either have to go for it or don't. I'll try and keep inching my way to the landing but again once you get 'almost' there and are flat landing on the top of the jump, it hurts. So you hit that point where it's 'okay go for it or not'. I won't lie, the other day at Perris I had two big FUCK OW moments where I went for it and didn't make it. One giving me whiplash like a bitch and the other cranking my wrist.

Work on your technique on a good midsize jump, getting comfy with body position, hangtime, etc then when you feel good just pin it and hang on!

I say practice on a midsize jump because smaller jumps don't give you enough hangtime to really get a feel for how the bike flies. Small jumps the bike just clears it and you don't really have to do much.

Nice goon air, only Trey Canard is awesome and does them on purpose to amuse people like me.

    Re: Perris MX in Cali

there's gotta be some technique here that us noobs are missing!

I used to hit this mini-jump back east, and kept going faster and faster, until my body and legs launched off the seat, the bike went down nose first, and my hands on the bars were the only things holding me to the bike....sort of like a superman

the bike landed first, and I came (what felt like) face first into the bar pad, my chest smashed into the tank, and I crashed at 15mph...needless to say, I stopped trying to hit "bigger" jumps...but something was off about my technique that kept me from staying on the bike when I was in the air

The thing is, you can talk technique (there is, not just balls!) all you want but it just comes with experience. It's all relative, a 70ft double doesn't take any "sacking up" for a pro rider to hit but joe-weekend will sit there and yell "fuck ya I got this" and go for it on a good day.

Like alex said, just pick a somewhat comfy jump and practice practice practice. Then you can try different jumps with different lengths/different height lips etc...

Body position and throttle control play a critical role of course. You can correct a bad take off in the air but that comes with experience as well. When you are new to jumps/bigger jumps you just get in the air, hold on and wait to land. when you get more fluid on the bike you can seat bounce/slam the rear brake in the air/etc

What you described above could be due to being too far forward, or even too far back and the rear suspension bucking you forward/off the pegs once you are airborn. Also just due to going too fast on a bad jump (tiny with abrupt/steep lip).

^^that or just plain dead sailoring on the bike. You've got to be loose enough to adjust your weight as needed...

yep, I'm not loose at all...and this might be the wrong kind of jump (it looks like the middle track in this pic) to hit fast

(you go in 2nd gear, the elevation drops down a foot, then you ride it up, and it has a lip on the top)

    yes, I sucks

oh yeah...and Alex and I are only a few hours from Mexico...Tijuana
