    Stimilon Academy

I signed up for the riding school on June 14th! I'm stoked. It's a little pricey, but it's at Southwick one week before the event. Plus, I've been riding MX for a season or two now with no real guidance other than watching the big guns. I'll be great to get a little feedback on the fundamentals, which are a little different than what I'm used to. I'm still improving all the time on my own, but I'm sure some experts input and focussed practice will be a great help.

Anbody else coming? Sign-up forms on stimilon site.

awesome paul, wish i could but i just can't justify the extra cash right now on what will be a very limited hobby for me right now. have you been out to southwick before? two weekends in a row is going to be a workout for sure, but now i know who i'm trying to follow!

No, I've never been there before. That's the main reason for signing up and dropping the cash. Dirt riding is generally so friggin cheap that it seems like money well spent. Coming from roadracing, it's not much to drop 200 bucks in a day... Dirt riders are cheap bastards I have noticed.

    Re: Stimilon Academy

lol, it is a ton cheaper for sure! southwick is big and soft but so much fun. i haven't ridden there since i was a kid and it ran the opposite direction, but we went to the nationals last year and even though the layout has changed, the surface is still all sand. when i was a kid racing 80's there, by the end of the day your line was determined by the ruts from the big bikes because the 80's were too small to get through them!

    Re: Stimilon Academy

My local practice area is sand, but it's more sugar sand. Ruts can't even form. I'm sure the 125 will be fastest following the ruts as well. It struggles a bit in the deep stuff. I'm not great at ruts yet, so it will be challenging for sure.

As far as fitness goes, I'm ready for that. A day of MX doesn't even get me sore anymore.

    Re: Stimilon Academy

ya I will be practicing on the crf at Loudon that weekend aha. O man, southwick and 125s...prepare to be robbed of power. Basically only let off the throttle if you think your bike is about to blow up

and yes, coming from dirt I don't like the prices of road racing stuff haha...especially tires, I am never getting a race 600!

    I'm in with ya -
Certainly pricey, but I'd like to familiarize myself a bit with the track.
Still better than a $300+ TD, or $1,000 race weekend

A day at Southwick will. You don't realize how deep the whoops are until you're on the track. Do NOT let off the throttle. If you stay on top of the whoops, it's brutal. If you drop down into the whoops, its a thousand times worse. There's a reason why even the pros struggle there.

    Re: Stimilon Academy

I better start riding my practice spot a couple times a week. It has the most brutal whoops I've encountered, and it's all sand. A lot of southwick racers come down here to practice.

Southwick kicked my ass so hard I gave up riding MX.

I never even got the full 4 laps in any of my races... always got lapped by the leaders before the end.

    Re: Stimilon Academy

ya you should have raced southwick on 80s....basically there are bikes flying and flipping all over the whooped out sections with kids flying off aha. That place pissed me off everytime I raced cuz it was so brutal on an 80.
