    rebuild time

long story short, i broke a ring in the 300. obviously it destroyed the piston and the cylinder. piston seems easy enough to find but apparently its a nikasil cylinder and no one makes a replacement cylinder. KTM does but its $700.
LA Sleeves appears to make a replacement sleeve for it for short money but i am unsure of what it takes to replace it. i assume im going to have to get it to a machine shop for this right?
also, their kit comes with a piston. should i get a different piston or just use the one they provide?

    Re: rebuild time

Don't sleeve it, send it to Millenium, Kustom Kraft, etc and they can weld it up, bore it back to OEM and have it replated for far less than buying a replacement.

    Re: rebuild time

sleeve cost is about $150. i have no idea what a shop would charge to swap it out.
i hadnt considered repair. i didnt really know that was a thing.
one of my concerns is i am clearly missing at least 1 piece of the broken ring. i dont know if it got spit out or if its in the bottom end somewhere

    Re: rebuild time

It couldn't have gone far, pull the side covers and inspect the crank seals. If those are intact any left over ring has got to be either long gone or in the crank valley.

On the repair option, many places do cylinder exchanges if you're looking for minimal down time FYI. That damage looks perfectly repairable, my WR started out with similar damage.

    Re: rebuild time

i couldve done this all in the bike but i decided that since ive had it for 3 years and done nothing to it and know nothing about it, i would do some much needed maintenance. i knew the radiators had been abused but taking them off really showed that they need some help. much like my cylinder, finding them for this year is proving difficult. the rear axle came out hard. and dry. new rear wheel bearings and a rear tire atre in the works as well as new chain sliders and an chain and sprockets. might as well do the swingarm bushings/bearings too. as much as i would like to have he suspension done, im not sure i can swing that though.

Chinese, might have to do a little grinding/etc to make them fit perfectly, but they are cheap and work. These are what I have on the motard currently. Alternatively, Mylers radiator repair might be able to restore yours for cheaper?

    Re: rebuild time

Kurlon's got you covered. Millenium for cylinder repair. You do sleeve a modern 2 stroke cylinder to the best of my knowledge. That process was abandoned in the 80s I think.

In the dirtbike world these days, there's a specialist that can recondition most any part that you destroy for less than buying new replacements.

    Re: rebuild time

millennium wants $350+ and KK wants $450+...ugh. putting a liner in it is gonna cost me about the same. waiting to hear back from one other place but i was told to expect similar pricing. i thought 2 strokes were supposed to be cheap to fix.

If you dropped a ring on a 4t you know it'd cost way more.

    Re: rebuild time

For not much more you can have one of those shops punch your cylinder out to the 320cc range, port, tune the head to match, and supply a piston/rings/etc, and still be less than a new OEM cylinder.

Maybe if you only use the bike for 2-3 months per year you can get a 75% rebate on the cost of the rebuild.
