Never ridden dirt-bikes, can you rent for a day?

So I've always wanted to try riding dirtbikes, but don't want to invest in a bike+gear if I'm not going to like it. Are there places (I assume in NH, ME?) that you'd recommend for renting one for the day with some fun but beginner trails?

I think the answer is somewhere between hell-no and get-some-more-friends.

But I'm in for other answers in case I am wrong...

You can borrow my DRZ if you want to help me put it back together! I don't know of any trails around here though, sadly...

Id say you could use my 134...but youd probably never ride dirt again after it had its way with you.

Hell of a lot harder to get a sled on it's side. It can be done, but requires way higher balls to brains ratio.

These guys offer a dirt bike course in MA and they provide the bikes: http://www.planetdirt.com

ya...northeast is pretty slim pickings for rentals...

I just hoogled and found this: http://www.seacoasttours.net/ but their website says they're not fully setup as a rental fleet just yet

the link kitt posted is a good option...or just find a friend...out here in CA when I had 2 dirt bikes, I'd loan one just to have a buddy to ride with in the mountains. but there are also rentals out here - www.gormanmotorsportrentals.com or www.rentrtoyz.com

    you can also check craigslist

I got a 01yz250f your welcome to borrow but it's not registered so you'd have to go to a track or something

There a number of places around that teach the MSF dirt rider course and the bike is usually included in the price.

    1st

Twisted throttle is next to Patchuag State forest where dirt riding is allowed like 30 total miles of trails
Assuming you pay for damage it is questionable but a drz or klr maybe maybe

    2nd

There are moto schools where you get bikes and training for the day I think one near the Berkshires

    3rd

Just jump in you pu**y you won't look back. Around here get a street legal used bike like a 250 slap good tires on it sign up for NETRA

Looks like a DRZ that is good for some trails to me  And the trails as Stromper said are right there.

There is Planet Dirt for some training too.

    2005 Suzuki DR-Z400SM (with 17" street tires)
I don't know if that was what the OP had in mind.. but it definitely isn't what I was thinking.

Re: Never ridden dirt-bikes, can you rent for a day?

    Thanks everyone for the input...
I did get in contact with the planet dirt folks, but their course is for beginner riders (how to shift, etc), and they mostly stay on a figure 8 track. Most "courses" focus more on the basics of riding.
I wouldn't want to take those twisted throttle bikes on dirt for my first time either... the KLR maybe, but it's pretty huge.

As someone suggested, I might just need to make friends with the right people

There's 62 miles of trails in Pachaug, it's directional and important for it's future use to stay on that trail only.
Another detail, the bike must be street legal

actually, for a new rider that's not railing corners or cresting the whoops, a supermoto is plenty capable in smooth dirt:

the issue is finding smooth fire roads like that...I never went to Pachaug, but from what I've seen posted I don't think it's smooth?

You don't really need smooth fire roads to enjoy a SuperMoto, and Pachaug is far from smooth. If it's dry, it's really good traction...a lot of rubber hits the ground.

Alright.. maybe that DRZ-SM rental isn't a horrible idea.

Still not what I meant when I thought "it'd be neat to try a dirt bike".

And don't get me wrong, one of these days I need to try a DRZ-SM anyway.. although on the street.

You don't want a drz sm. You want a dirt bike. Drz is a heavy pig. It ill equates to a real dirt bike. Id look for a 250f to try if I were you.

If you want to try a real dirtbike stay away from the DRZ. Its a good bike and has a purpose but straight up dirt riding isnt it. Find someone that has a bike built for motocross or trail riding.
