Speaking personally (and completely thread-jacking at this point), I think a DRZ400 would be pretty nifty in my garage. I've gone so far as to ponder the "which one" question to myself. I think an -SM with a spare set of wheels would be the ticket for me, personally. Yeah, yeah, it's too underpowered and too heavy. But so am I and we all look the other way.

I just don't think I am that serious about off-road riding.. ever.

Although I'd still like to try some real dirt bikes a time or two just to confirm.

Its not just the power and weight. Suspension is also worlds better on a modern mx or trail bike. Damper forks just can't compete with large cartridge upside down units. You probably wouldn't like the power delivery of a 2 stroke mx bike...but that hit is my kryptonite.

Ignorance is a wonderful thing; I've never owned anything but damper rod forks.

smuts - the ignorance thing is why I think the drz is an attractive option - if the OP is just trying out dirt, he likely won't appreciate the difference between differently valved forks without trying both kind of bikes. Finding a friend is hands-down the best (and cheapest) option, but if he doesn't know anyone, I think the drz is the next best thing...plus it helps the local business?

But a drz could also turn him off from dirt riding. Riding a real dirt bike is way more fun and gives a person much more confidence. The dual sport bikes that I have rode left me with a state of non excitement. There just isn't much fun in riding imo wheb you have to throw a heavy underpowered bike around.

While I agree the drz is lame, the fun factor lies in going to Starbucks or the strip club, or even school with it. Something you can't do with a 250f.

I'm just imagining these guys as sit down all the time trail pokers, you've seen them lit there before. The drz is fine for that.

I am not afraid of standing on the pegs.

Quite frankly I don't belong in this thread. I don't have the time or budget to commit to anything close to serious dirt riding.

A serious dirt bike can cost less than a drz...

    Mine was $1500.

Does that include gear? Trailer? Mounts? Support paraphernalia to get you to/from trail? (Yeah, yeah, some of that I have.. some I don't.)

With a DRZ you can safely wear street gear while buzzing down a public road and occasionally pretend you're a badass offroader. That's how it plays out in my imagination anyway.

$1500 dirt bike... $1000 in gear...couple hundo for a hitch mount carrier...and you are in drz territory or a little bit cheaper.

In all honesty this is why I love my DRZ. No, it's not a pure bred mx bike, but I'm not pretending it is either. I don't have a trailer, or a pickup truck, so I can't justify buying a pure dirt bike that will sit in my garage, except for a few outings per year maybe. When I took that pic above, I had zero intention of being on dirt that day. I was just out for a ride, took a few side roads to get lost and ended up coming across a dirt road that turned into trails, so I took them. Is it the best off road? I can't compare it to much else, but I'm going to say it's a hell of a lot better off road than my 636 would be. I think with some proper tires, it would be even more fun. So no, I don't think if you want to do 100% dirt that you should go out and buy a DRZ, but if you want a street bike that doesn't mind getting dirty from time to time, I really think the DRZ is a pretty decent choice.

So, easy answer - We need an NESR dirt day and some of us need to let the potential dirty dooer on our donks so he can get a feel for things.

Sadly, most people don't live close enoug

The nesr rise of the dirtcycles was pretty effective though...

That's a great idea! We have a Honda XR100R but obviously in Boston there aren't a lot of places to ride it.

Hemonds MX park is available for rent, $50/hr. Last time I went with a group it was like $12 each for more laps than I wanted! Going again for a private rental next month with a group, it's been a while but it's a super fun track for all skill levels, including young kids (we split into groups to avoid them getting run over..)
Kind of a haul from MA but well worth it if you spend the day.

Pretty cool on board of the track (not mine)
