    Wirelessly posted (GS3)

I'm very new to this scene but I know a lot of guys on here go to a multitude of different events.
So I figured I'd start this thread for people post up links to different events or organizations. I see people mention things like jdays and I have no idea what those are, what they entail or where to find info.
So here's the place. If you've got a group/org that you ride with or hear of an event then post it up here.

http://jdayoffroad.com/ Woods racing mixed with MX in a short course type format

http://www.netra.org/ Hare scrambles and enduro type events

http://pilgrimsandstrailriders.org/ Short course events based more on the southeastern MA end of things

http://mvtr.org/ club that maintains the Clough trails based in Concord NH at Freedom Cycle

Those are the couple that I could think of off the top of my head. There are a ton more and the ones I listed are more than the little tag lines I put after them as well. Go to their sites and see what they have to offer.

    Re: off road events/orgs

Netra is a regional org of many different local clubs that do a bunch of different stuff.
Sanctioned racing:enduros, hare scrambles, jr enduros, peewee stuff, the whole 9.
Also, some recreational rides, and turkey runs. The tr is traditionally longer, similar to an enduro course, and route sheeted.
Netra scramble c (nov) class races for 1.5hrs on a 7-12 mile loop. Start is in waves by class
Enduro is a 50-100 mile course which may or may not repeat sections. The event is timed, ad it's a little more of a game as well as a race. Basically: balls out through the woods, mind your p's and Q's on the roads, with a couple extra hiccups to keep you guessing: surprise checks, and clock resets. You've gotta pay attention to your route sheet.

Www.jdayoffroad.com is another series, more of a gp. He mixes it up with a mix of woods, grass track, obstacles, and depending on the specific venue, some mx too. 2- 30 min motos, combined score for overall.

PSTR is a netra club that hosts it's own miniseries.
2-5 mile laps, 2-40min motos combined for an overall score

That's the 3 things going on in the region, besides mx.

This is the 2014 netra schedule:

As you can see, it's very busy.
    It's pretty family oriented too.

It does. He has been building himself quite a series. It's like a full scale event.
The courses are often "easier" and wider, so the speeds are up and more spectator friendly.
Lotta guys complain about driving 3-4hrs for 2 30m motos.
For the same $ you could do an enduro and get beaten into submission all damn day.

It's fully a "different strokes" type thing IMO. I have a bunch of friends that do them, and I've been meaning to get in one for the past few years. 2/16 is only 20 min from my house, and very much on my radar, rada.

off-road racing in general is super family oriented. i really miss it. we used to travel as a family sometimes 10+hrs to go race. always a great time with great people.

MX can be a little intimidating but it's the same scene really.. . good times.

did you guys see the shit John Day is getting in Woodstock, CT? they should welcome him with open arms, this guy is doing it right! he's the future of local off-road for sure.

Travel is part of the racing game... We always embraced the road trip.

Hell I drove as much as 10 hours to race three motos once..

Racing AMA Dist.3 for me meant that the closest race was a bit over 2 hours away. Most were 3+....

I may have to give a J Day a whirl next year...

Sounds that way. He doesn't want hell raisers terrorizing his small rural town so he plays the kid card to get his way. If they didn't have that huge PITA fair in the same town I'd have different thoughts about it.

    Re: off road events/orgs

ok, im gonna ask the dumb questions now.
whats the difference between these "races"
    enduros
    jr enduros
    short courses
    turkey runs
    hare scambles
    dual sports

i know chip gave a brief description of a few but just trying to centralize and understand

also, equipment needed. i see stuff like trip sheets and even a mention of a license (im assuming a drivers/motorcycle license), is there anything else?

    Re: off road events/orgs

Enduro is an on and off road timed even with checkpoints. 60-100 miles.

    JR enduros are for kids

Hairscrambles are long off road only races usually around 10 miles per lap. 1.5-2.5 hours.

Short courses are like mini scrambles, 2-5 miles per lap and 30-40 minutes

Turkey runs are enduros without the timing. Just a fun ride with some connecting street sections.

    Re: off road events/orgs

Enduros: long (50-100m) course, timing game. Need street regd dirty, minimal lights, license, route sheet holder ($20) and a cheap digital watch to keep time with.

    Jr enduros: you're too old

Short course: 2-5 mile loop, all offroad. Flag drops, first person crosses wins. Usually a multi-Moto event. Number plates & transponder (NOT like a lrrs xponder, either a sticker with an electro gizmo, or a little tube you attach to your person)

Turkey run: non competitive ride, mostly offroad with some street connectors. Need a route sheet holder to follow the directions, street regd bike. Courses are typically at least 40 miles

Hare scramble: woods sprint race. 7-12 mile loop, c class is 1.5hrs. Need orgs' transponder for scoring. Netra rents them for $10, or you can buy them for $30.

Dual sport: on/offroad ride typically geared towards larger bikes klr, dr650, etc with optional "hero" sections, which are typically woodsy single track bits just like a hs course. Need a street regd bike and a route sheet holder.

All the events that require a route sheet USUALLY are arrowed pretty good so you can follow the trail through the woods without reading too much.
During an enduro though, they will sneak time resets in woods sections and surprise checks. So yu gotta pay a little attention.
All the long rides will either have a gas truck, or a scheduled gas stop, so you bring your gas can to the truck and they bring it to the stop and back to the start for you, or they'll let you know in advance to bring premix with you to get fuel at a gas station.

This is what I use, it's a piece of shit. They all are, except the brz one, but that's custom made, and very expensive.

    Re: off road events/orgs

I should add that woods racing is THE MOST physically demanding activity I've ever done. Worse than racing xc mountainbikes, even.
It's part of the draw. It's not like road racing where you can almost buy all the fast (except balls). You wanna go fast offroad, plan on getting fit.

My bike had bits of one of these left on it when I bought it.. and a NETRA turkey run sticker on the headlight shroud. Seems it has been there, done that.

I don't understand the reset thing. But overall this sounds like a crapload of fun.

    I gotta get fit. ... And a van/camper.

    Re: off road events/orgs

    The reset thing is twofold:
A: you reset your mileage in a given section to match back up to the route sheet (or you don't, and do the math in your head, which can get tedious after many miles and different reset amounts)
B: it gets you back on time during an enduro. If there's a 5 min reset and you're 3 min behind, you stop for 2, and head back out on time.

The game in an enduro is to always be on time. Too late is bad, too early is worse.

As a turkey run is not competitive, the resets are only for keeping your mileage in line with the route sheet.

    Re: off road events/orgs

I'll continue to add: my bike has an oem headlight (no hi/lo), and a tail light/brake light.

    That's it.

I've podiumed enduros with just that. No odo. The courses and resets are usually marked well enough to do well with just a route sheet and a watch. I'll go back up and edit the other post, but you need a watch for an enduro. You set it minus the minute you're on (your line) to match the master time for the event. It sounds complicated, but it's not.
