school me on a ktm 690 enduro r

Re: school me on a ktm 690 enduro r

so the metal hose clamp through the PTT switch doesn't work

    it bridges the contacts

clamp came out, a piece of electrical tape went over the contacts, and zip ties went through

bike is back; rade tank fuel line was cracked and leaking too

horn works, 14t put on, new front tire put on, new fuel line for the rade tank.

also need some more cliff bars - our goal is train ourselves to snack/pee on the hour. Sip water throughout, and no lunch. If you get a little hungrier at the 2nd half of the day, just have 2 cliff bars at the stops.

looking like low 40's in the AM; so heavy gloves + REI rain shell for the first 2 hours. Swap to lighter gloves/remove rain shell as it warms up.

just heard of a guy who's 701 died at a rally because of the kick stand switch...I gotta find that dongle and swap it out!

*maybe* one more shakedown day; otherwise once it's setup, I'm not touching it until the ride!!!

Re: school me on a ktm 690 enduro r

    here's the pack/radio setup:

speakers into the pockets, boom mic in the front, cut off the extra wire, and just left the helmet connection hanging out of a seam:

the wire clip guide for my LED headlamp doubles as a holster when the radio's not in use:

put the backpack on, helmet on, then attach the helmet to this black wire with the blue connector:

amazon cradle with a Baofeng UV5R; 5W radio

then get on the bike and attach the coiled wire w' RCA plug (really Rugged? RCA?!?) to the PTT button on the bars

The last two B2V's, it kinda sucked. The little secret service looking earpiece was not quite clear enough unless you were stopped, and grabbing the PTT on a little clip was tough to do with gloves, while moving. The radio is a little tricky to use too if you never played around with it. Youtube has some good basic tutorials on them.

We do another radio test this weekend with the handlebar PTT. Hopefully it works, and we use it *appropriately*: only for emergencies. Out in the desert, you need focus!! Ride safe and pay attention to the roll chart and the GPX Track!

roll chart holder installed on a RAM base plate. Easier to load the roll chart in the AM by unhooking it.

    2 weeks to go!!

Going to stop by The Mirage hotel/casino too...scheduled to close in December.

Re: school me on a ktm 690 enduro r

rained a few days ago, so desert conditions were pleasantly "soft"

radios worked; moved my mirror to the handguard bolt to make room for my roll chart holder

TEMP REGULATION: Was low 40's in the AM and mid 60's by noon; so I was sweating after an hour. So I tried opening the vents on the sleeves near the arm pits AND IT WAS LIKE AN A/C!!. It was awesome! It cooled my sweaty body and almost made me a little chilly. No need to add/shed a rain shell and have to stop/pull over to take it off, or remove the jacket’s sleeves Just use the armpit vents; not the sleeve vents, pant vents, nor the chest vents.

I've been lifting for about a year consistently (not intensely; just consistently 1-5 days a week for a year) and no soreness the next day

radios worked; although range was hit or miss.

    under 2 weeks away!!

Re: school me on a ktm 690 enduro r

so I did a pretty thorough cleaning on the old filter, and no dirt came out

A lot of the OEM coloring came off when I cleaned it the first time, so I'm guessing it looks grungy all the time.

On top of it, we're running two pre-filters per day.

At the completion of day 1, toss the old ones, and install two new pre-oiled pre-filters for day 2.

Kind of feeling like I should just run the new filter for the event. Don't really need a "backup" since I'll likely list this for sale by April. I figure B2V is my biggest ride of the year; so it's kind of a special occasion!

Bike just needs the gas topped off and final fastener check/inspection by myself, and then she'll be parked until next Friday.

I'm surprised it's that stained. Betting a clean in kero would make it look fresh again?

Yeah, my guess is that there is residual filter oil of various types on the foam that whatever cleaner was used did not remove. I've had filters that looked similar in the past and cleaning with a different cleaner, one designed for the oil that is doing the discoloring, took the grungy look off.

Re: school me on a ktm 690 enduro r

honestly idk where to even get kerosene

k, lemme check walmart, home depot, and some local auto parts stores

another issue I had with the Rade Garage Aux tank under the seat....is the seat:

the tank pushes it up a little, so the front seat mount pops off while riding

it sucks to be exhausted after 200 miles of dirt and having a seat bouncing around

the seat attaches on a post:

and the seat is a little worn out/widened:

so I got a couple sizes of washers wider than the top of the post:

and hopefully this keeps the seat down!

Easy source of Kerosene: Unscented lamp oil, often called paraffin oil. Hardware stores should have it in gallon or possibly smaller sizes.

Diesel works too, though may cost more due to taxes, and isn't as 'clean' as the lamp oil. Plus, the lamp oil will come in it's own resealable container for easy reuse. I filter through blue shop towels and reuse my kero lots and lots and lots of times.

I checked home depot, and they only carry a kerosene substitute

found one online at a walmart, but it's 30 mins away, so I gave up for now

    next time

just oiled the new one, added 2 pre filters, and sending it

packing 2 more oiled pre-filters in a ziplock bag to swap between day 1 and day 2

    I also finally got these:

ngl, they're easier to hook to vs. looping through handlebars/controls

they also have a better angle to the Mav's tie down points, so it's a little more stable

    bike/fuel/riding gear packed

just need to buy new MX socks, tinted goggles, and pack the rest of the chargers/radios/gopro/vegas toiletries/clothes.

still undecided on: apple watch or a cheap timex watch?

I'm still 50/50 on wearing a rain shell with thick gloves in the AM; and the last slab into vegas can be cold

    I leave tomorrow

I keep thinking about getting those hooks but the soft loops I use around the lower triples more or less accomplish the same thing and can be used on all my bikes.

My buddy did that! Was a way to get between light gloved and heavy gloves

I went with a game day decision plan: show up with the gear, and step outside. It was cold for me, so I went the full winter cyclegear glove with rain shell, and did not regret it. I just run cold as a skinny kid. The pavement 35-55mph sections for 20-30 mins gets to me.

    Filter 1

    Filter 2

Short day! Probably the shortest day 1 ever..:like only 100 miles

    We were in by 11:45am

Day 2 is going to be rough…like 220-240 miles! Over double what we did today….and a lot of rough sand wash after baker

At least we got some rest

Re: school me on a ktm 690 enduro r

Day 2 easy ways were ROUGH

Like miles, of energy draining, loose, washboard, whooped out sand.

made it from Barstow to Baker; skipped a couple backup/crowded sections, and made it to Baker without issues. Loose mirror, so I had to pull over to tighten the handguard and got separated from my friends. Super dusty on Kingston road heading into Sandy Valley, but we made it...gas was now spilling onto the engine from under the seat; I'm guessing it's the Rade tank. I finally get it to stop (it empties completely) and we continue onto the 2nd-last dirt section.

    Then, all of a sudden…

Muffler detached, and I couldn’t just line it back up.

    Fuel pissing everywhere

The subframe (which holds the whole gas tank ) lower bolts were completely sheared off on both sides

The upper right subframe bolt was out and couldn’t be tightened. The threads are likely stripped.

Since the subframe also supports the muffler, when it came out, it yanked the aux tank fuel line with it

The gas tank and my seat were all left being supported by one bolt

    My friend: “Are you done?”

Me: “With the ride? Yeah I probably need a tow into town.”

My friend: “No (points to the engine, points to the exhaust). This is the second time in 2 years of B2V this bike had issues; are you done?”

Re-attached the fuel line to the Rade tank to stop the fuel from spilling, pulled the muffler against the header the best I could with safety wire, and rode the last 45 miles on pavement. Pulled over a couple times to move the exhaust mount from dragging against the chain.

    What an adventure!

    ----------------------------------------
    EDIT: day 2 filter pics:

    1st pre-filter

    2nd pre-filter

    actual filter

2nd day had 120+ more miles, there was way more sand and I didn't get to "seal" the pre-filter around the air filter because I was changing it in a parking lot. It's expected to be dirtier.

    Haha, thanks dude

It was really a rough 2nd day on the bikes…I am sure any bike could have its fair share of issues. Even then, what would we have done? Tightened the subframe bolts a little more than factory? Short of putting a wrench on every bolt on the bike to test the torque (which I paid for a safety inspection), I wouldn’t be over tightening anything

Still a great day! I finished 90% of the ride, had an adventure, and I will take a broken bike over a broken body any day of the year.

Still planning on selling it, going to get her fixed up, do some local/street rides and let it go.

EDIT: you should fly out and do the ride!!!

I was going to leave the mustache on before returning to work, but I don't think coworkers could handle being turned on all the time.

bike is now back to it's "home"

going to get the subframe/exhaust sorted, then do plastics at home

thinking about going back to "street" duty for awhile...windscreen, +2 front sprocket, street rubber, top case, zippered tank bag

trying to source some plastics to make it sale worthy, fish an ad, and see if there are any takers at...

Ok, so header and muffler are both bent beyond re-use; inches away from where it痴 supposed to be.

with labor I知 looking at a total of $1,400 (if I go OEM exhaust) or $1,800 (if I go for aftermarket)

Plastics and graphics will run me $400-ish, so I壇 have to spend $2,200 to get it showroom ready to even get a quote as a trade in.

Kind of leaning towards a hell naw.

    --------------------------------------------

    EDIT:

It came off a 2016 690 enduro (2014-2018 should fit), good condition, and only $60

this might save the budget to get it ride worthy!! knocks $730 off the cost of this repair work!

Aaaand most of the fasteners/hardware they need are on backorder until March of 2023

Re: school me on a ktm 690 enduro r

the subframe bolts are the backordered parts

perun moto and rally raid make kits:

I also took the dealer parts list, sourced some of the missing pieces from their list from RMATV, and got 95% of what I need

but they are really backed up, so they couldn't work on it for awhile

so I watched some youtube videos...and took it back

this is where the old subframe bolt comes out of:

    trashed:

    replacement kit:

this is the 2 piece upper subframe bolts:

got those in, but the upper left doesn't line up after the exhaust got put in; I need to loosen everything, pull down with a ratchet strap, and try again

still missing one collar where the muffler meets the header

and the rade garage aux tank kit is a pain in my butthole. The fuel lines are cracked/leaking, and each end is a different size (ie. one side is a 1/4" ID and the other side is a 1/8" ) so I can't buy fuel line off the shelf to replace it. And without the fuel line attached, it pisses fuel everywhere...tempted to just take it out.

and the new subframe bolts are in

I had to loosen everything, and cinch the tank down with a ratchet strap to get the upper left subframe bolt in. It's tight; but it's pushing against a rubber bushing so there's flex built in.

new fuel lines for the Rade Garage 1.6 gallon aux fuel tank:

don't have to stress about whether or not the fuel line will crack

still waiting on the exhaust collar; but bike runs and is structurally sound without it...just a little louder

Joining an Anza Borrego low desert ADV/dual sport day on Wednesday:

-15 miles of pavement at 55-65mph

    -15 miles of jeep/fire road

-5 miles of canyon twisties to get into town for lunch

Then several options of 30-100 mile loops of dirt or pavement to get back to camp.

This is ideal dual sport sort duty for a 250<->701, 4 stroke

I am stoked I could get the bike back together. This is exactly the kind of ride it's designed to do.

    and the bike survived!

we only did 10ish miles of dirt, then did 70 miles of pavement:

yaqui pass into borrego springs for lunch

then montezuma valley twisties back to camp

    true dual sport ride!

excellent platform for this kind of riding. Cruising pavement at 70-75mph on a 690 was a breeze

now to put on the new plastics, exhaust collar, and list her for sale

also saw one of these in person:

he said the suspension just plants the tires onto the ground.

so this was the sheep wagon:

basic, kind of charming, and the carpenter ant that bit me only stung for a day or 2

but man, oh man...at 3:30am when that desert wind kicked up, I was super glad I was in a heated structure to keep me from getting cold and windy!

one of the guys got the campsite with this structure:

sure kept the wind down for the campfire!

stopped at Alex's (A13x) shop on the way back, but they were closed:

    and the Maverick did well

super stoked to get that kind of mileage on a longer drive home for something with a bed!

efficient for work, and efficient for moto trips loaded up with a gear and a 350lb bike
