    Spark arrestors

Do stock pipes all have spark arrestors in them? What am I looking for to make sure there is one there?

    Re: Spark arrestors

My CRF250 did not have a spark arrestor in it. I doubt they come in many bikes stock. Its pretty much a screen in a cone shape stuck in the end of the muffler.

They sell spark arresters that you can install on your stock pipe. Tim

    Re: Spark arrestors

AFAIK, spark arrestors come is 2 styles: a screen type, and a Krizman type. The screen type is just what it sounds like - a piece of screen, usually conical in shape, affixed to the inside of the muffler. This screen is sized to allow gases to escape, but stop any hot, glowing particles. A Krizman type SA looks like the inlet cone and fan blade of a jet engine. The "blade" of a Krizman SA does not actually spin, though. It is rigidly affixed to the muffler. This blade induces a "spin" in the exhaust gases as they pass through the muffler. Centrifugal force throws the offending hot carbon particles outward, where they are caught in a round tray that is affixed to the inner circumference of the muffler.
So, if you are looking for the SA in your muffler, you should either see a rather a very obvious screen, or a large, rigid turbine looking device, usually made from steel.
Most MX bikes do not have one, most street/dual sport/enduro bikes do.

    Re: Spark arrestors

Cobra Sparky spark arrestors used to be quite common at NETRA events. The are a clamp on style, and run around $75.

    Re: Spark arrestors

Anyone heard anything about Lexx exhausts? A slip on costs like 40 bucks more than the end cap thingie, and it has a spark arrestor. For 40 bucks Id rather buy a slipon and keep the stock exhaust as a spare.

    Re: Spark arrestors

Theothersean has one on his YZ450f. It works quite well, compared to the stock muffler. I believe that he had the quiet core in it when I last heard it.
