Re: street legal 2-strokes
LAB2V has a 90 mile fuel range
3.4 gallons @ 22mpg will net me ~75 miles, so I'm adding this:
http://www.altrider.com/images/thumb...ine-pack-2.jpg
with a mount
https://rotopax.com/images/P/Pack-Mount-02.png
for an extra 1.75 gallons (~113 mile range)
will drop the needle one clip to lean out the midrange
last 3 big $$ purchases:
-trailtech
-DOT tires
-Baja Designs S2 LED headlight (but I need to make sure my headlight is rectified to D/C first)

@myself...the trail tech website says "Yamaha 95-04 YZ/YZF/WR 125/250/400/450" but I can't imagine a 94 and 95 are much different...emailed trail tech to make sure the endurance ii will work on my bike
Re: street legal 2-strokes
Re: street legal 2-strokes
man that 1.75 gallon roto pax is a lot bigger than I anticipated...will need to bolt a piece of metal between the exhaust mount and fender mount or the whole rear fender is going to rip off on my first whoops section
tick tock on the clock, DJ turn the speakers up
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...psyrx9vefb.jpg
response from trail tech recommended kit 202-700 for my bike...ordered...another $94 spent
posted in LAB2V thread about tires...backup is the MotoZ tractionator that Clinton mentioned
more ish to do:
1.) bleed front/rear brakes/check pads
2.) buy/mount DOT tires - most aggressive possible w' heavy duty bridgestone tubes
3.) install hour meter
4.) make metal bracket to mount RotoPax fuel container
5.) add LED headlight into high beam - I might use the $13 one I got from amazon (great reviews online!), but part of me *may* just man up and buy the Baja Designs S2 polisport
6.) handlebar goodies - Garmin off road GPS w' Ram mount, roll chart holder, endurance ii
7.) swap that UFO tail for all LED's, install LED signals
8.) go for a test ride w' endurance - check gas mileage w' the lowered needle 1 clip
9.) spare front tube w' mount on front fender
10.) pack hydration pack w' tools - practice working on bike with said tools - store spare fasteners, spark plug, etc.
the bolt kit bryco posted already came into use...found a caliper bolt missing!!!
reminds me to go through every bolt, hand tighten it, loc tite it
edit #gazillion - brakes bled...feel about the same although the fluid was brown.
Good news - THE WHOLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS DC!!! Switching to LED turn signals!
Also...instead of getting an LED headlight; why not just get an LED bulb and swap it into my current headlight?

good news - all the bulbs in there are standard automotive replacement bulbs
the brake/tail light is a 12v 21w/5w standard 1157 style socket - available all over the place
I always ran an SMD style LED in my FZR600 and that was as good as it could get while still being seen in daylight hours
http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/...ps811074f5.jpg
2 screws in the lens gain access to popping out the bulb
the turn signals, oddly enough, were a 194 style bulb (on cars this is usually a parking light; not bright enough as a turn signal)...which comes a variety of different ways (although IIRC CREE is the best)
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...TL._SX425_.jpg
so that takes care of my rear end...
front will get an 18w LED driving light (or a replacement H4 headlight bulb) and the front signals will likely be the Tusk D-flex handguard w' LED signals
Re: street legal 2-strokes
Late start at work today...Rode at 8am...
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...psh0os14mo.jpg
bad idea...I am POOPED at work today!
And the front brake line wiggled loose :spit:
man EVERYTHING normally ejects off! I'm just glad I did this run before LA-B to V!!!
going to do some more runs to build some endurance...and the forks are super stiff on the compression; need to decrease that compression damping
Re: street legal 2-strokes
chaparral is HUGE and they stock a ton of tires!!
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...psa6bpwrxp.jpg
aisles and aisles of this!! bigger than the NTB in Shrewsbury!
mounting my motoZ tractionator H/T
AND they had OEM clutch and throttle cables IN STOCK ON HAND
love this place! my poor poor wallet!
Re: street legal 2-strokes
I remember driving past on the interstate on my way up to Sequoia. Looked like it could be handy.
Damned shame about the taxes.
Re: street legal 2-strokes
$360+ later :sad2:
moto Z DOT knobby, b-stone ultra heavy duty rear tube, installation, heavy duty front tube
plus collected the "necessary breakables" - spare throttle/clutch cable, spare brake/clutch levers, new DID chain, extra master

Saturday night: NITRO CIRCUS!
http://www.thegrindradio.co.za/wp-co...o-Circus-2.jpg
Sunday - DESERT RUN!
3 weeks until LAB2V!!!
gonna be 30's in the AM...I don't have an ADV coat, but was honestly just planning on an old $50 textile street jacket I bought from JohnnyV back in 2003 LOL
Re: street legal 2-strokes
did an LAB2V shakedown run today
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...pszkefe6mh.jpg
fantastic weather out in Barstow today
issues:
-took a spectacular face plant going over the bars into a pile of rocks and landed on my left shoulder, which now makes my back ache..ankle sore...hands sore...wrists sore. Really taught me to ride the desert like it's at night: don't override what you can't see!
-crash destroyed what was left of turn signals/brakelight/taillight - time for the UFO tail
-forks super stiff - need to decrease compression damping
-shock keeps bucking me off - need to increase rebound damping
motoZ tractionator desert H/T tire was really good! :hellyeah:
Re: street legal 2-strokes
mounted:
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...psskld2efa.jpg
construction seems alright...reflector and optics of tail/brake light are GREAT! I was worried about a spot-light pattern throwing an LED into a housing for an incandescent bulb, but no regrets! Turn signals are meh w' LED's though
why they make the reinforced "mounting points" nowhere close to where the screw holes on every US motorcycle plate is beyond me...so I wrapped it around. I don't need any sharp edges to grab the plate and tear the whole tail off
also mounted this:
http://image.dhgate.com/albu_2899522...r-off-road.jpg
it is WAY BETTER THAN THE OEM BAJA DESIGNS OPTICS!
It's literally night and day...very happy with that $18 amazon purchase...great reviews all around too
best part?
the current draw of this "headlight" and all the other lights are < what the stator puts out :hellyeah:
when the rpm's are low, the lights hardly dim at all! and after a ride, the battery is fully charged! the incandescent headlight killed it within 15 mins...I had to keep the rpm's revved to get any light out of the headlight at stop lights...PITA and very irritating to other drivers
Re: street legal 2-strokes
wanted to strengthen the rear fender for the rotopax in the whoops section
acerbis makes a rear fender support:
http://static.chaparral-racing.com/p...04054-0001.jpg
and google showed a good idea - put aluminum strips and coat with truck bedliner!
Re: street legal 2-strokes
Do you have a link for the led light? Looks like a decent light for the price.
Re: street legal 2-strokes
yup...and & it's <$14
Amazon.com: KAWELL® 18W 6.2" DC 9-32V 6500K 1170LM 90 Degree LED for ATV/Jeep/boat/suv/truck/car/atvs light Off Road Waterproof Led Work Flood Light Bar Black Color: Automotive
just fyi, it's a flood...blinds oncoming traffic...there is a spot somewhere in the reviews for around the same price
review:

I am actually planning on putting a couple in my truck bed, a couple as backup lights, and one on my street bike
Re: street legal 2-strokes
Re: street legal 2-strokes
'nother pre-work shakedown run
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...psipzgxc9t.jpg
the spot near work is only 7 miles of a gravel road to ride back and forth on :P whoop-de-doo
explored some of the side sections today instead...small...lots of rocks...thought I'd make the most of the space available and just have fun with it
the trail tech runs on its own, but add a +12 and the LCD screen will backlight :hellyeah:
don't really want to run it directly off the battery (since it's pretty much just 8 AA batteries), so I'm going to tie it into the headlight so it only lights up when the engine is running
roll chart mounted...the RAM mount works really well for the GPS...but saw some front tire cracks...need to replace it :(
and need some gopro adapters and can't forget to pack the charger...don't really want to buy $100 of batteries; so I'm thinking about just using the 2 that I have, and not record the whole time. Trying to mentally list and order any last items now to give it time to deliver.
under 2 weeks to goooooo!!!!
Re: street legal 2-strokes
back to Chaparral for the front tire...
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...pspf3bleyt.jpg
I am having a heavy duty tube installed in the front and keeping the old standard tube as backup on the ride
most DOT/dual sport front tires are a 90/100 instead of the 80/100 that came on my MX model..so I am going with the wider tire
I calculated that I would need two big bottles of pre-mix for the two days plus a small 4oz bottle in my backpack as backup..,$70 of oil :spit:
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...psotoyp80k.jpg
Chaparral had tons
going to mix 10 gallons in advance using the $12 five gallon gas cans at Target for the chase truck to carry and meet us at gas stops
today I pony up and drill into the brake caliper to install the sensor for the trail tech...mount my gps and power it up..
working Wed-Fri then another shakedown run on Saturday...fix w/e remains on Sunday...
dropping bike off at Palmdale supercycles Weds, dropping truck in Vegas Thu, flying back to Long Beach and my friend picks me up on his way up to the start
Re: street legal 2-strokes
got home and found a bunch of goodies at the mailbox!
SURPRISE!
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...psdvug07li.jpg
...and it's plastic :dunno:
from the mf'r pics, I figured it would be metal...
oh well, still better than anything I could make
Re: street legal 2-strokes
FLIGHT BOOKED
Vegas -> Long Beach $39 on Thanksgiving day!
Will be flying 6-7pm while everyone else is eating ... #singlelife :hellyeah:
Also got a buddy riding back with me Monday which covers my gas...also going to volunteer to rent a trailer and tow back bikes to Socal if people were looking to split a rental car

'nother shakedown run today...
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...psq7iczypm.jpg
isn't the desert beautiful?
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps57t35odk.jpg
visited the husky monument out in the middle of the desert
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps4zc6wdci.jpg
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...psvqwidzmw.jpg
covered ~100 miles today
bad news:
-butt gets store after 40 miles...trying to stand more
-LAB2V forecast in the 30's-40's
-the roto-pax smacks me in the butt when I'm leaned back in the whoops - no ripping through whoops fo' me
good news:
-most desert service/trail roads are 3rd-5th gear/off pipe = I got ~30mpg  - my desert tank should take me over 100 miles!
-everything works...hopefully it stays that way
less than a week to gooooo!!
man...it is SUCH a great feeling to bomb through those open desert roads...see a straight, pre-load and bounce the suspension on that slight rise and wheelie at 50mph :hellyeah:
BUT pacing is important...ride to have fun early in the day and you'll be tired very, very quickly. 240 miles/day!
Re: street legal 2-strokes
Love squeezing in a quick ride before work when I don't start until 11...
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...psaun9sgw8.jpg
#socal - where you can be here for breakfast, a beach for lunch, and nightclub...all in one day
I am starting to see why dot knobbies are better for the street - the profile isn't as squared off so you can kinda lean into turns more safely...I am sorta liking it and may just always run 'em DOT from now on :hellyeah:
Rode a canyon road after the dirt...had fun!
Will upload gopro after work
