Re: street legal 2-strokes
thanks for the input!
I do like the YZ250 already...it would definitely be awesome with a street plate
gonna try to get it!
otherwise...in my CL scanning, I saw this YSR80 for $750:
http://images.craigslist.org/00j0j_6...qu_600x450.jpg
http://images.craigslist.org/00m0m_l...Xh_600x450.jpg
going to get that too! street legal! runs! comes with fairings!
Re: street legal 2-strokes
ysr80 was a CL scam...what a douche
but this, ladies and gentlemen, is what I've been waiting for!
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst...517056264.html
1993 KDX 200 - $1600
http://images.craigslist.org/00o0o_1...S8_600x450.jpg
has a friggen kick stand
if you look *very* carefully on the rear fender, you can see a street license plate bent around the back there.
message sent!!
there's also this bike - already talked to him, and he wants $2,000 for it:
http://images.craigslist.org/00S0S_8...bp_600x450.jpg
http://images.craigslist.org/00909_E...4k_600x450.jpg
but I'd have to add all my own lights...and I don't know what the stator status is...
did all KDX 200's have the stator pre-wired, even if the bike didn't come with lights?
but I would love a KDX200...it is light, has a great power delivery, wide ratio transmission (?), 3 gallon tank for range in the CA forests/desert, lighting stator, and it's a fargin 2-smoker. Oh yeah.
and to clarify: the tricky part in CA is to have a 2002 or older 2-stroke that *already* has a plate. 2003 or newer - they do not allow it (and will pull it), the older bikes can be grandfathered in. That's why both of those bikes are appealing. Once registered to me, at no point in time will anybody perform a safety inspection to make sure I have all the OEM street legal parts. I can only be ticketed if I get pulled over and an officer goes over it...but from what I've heard, they only check for all the lights, signals, and reflectors.
Re: street legal 2-strokes
Left a deposit on the 2nd one!
Will likely end up with the Tusk enduro lighting kit, but going to try and find a cheaper way to add the head, tail, brake lights, and signals!
Re: street legal 2-strokes
after 3 months of searching, missing a few good opportunities, and spending more than I expected to, I finally got a 2-stroke dirtbike with a CA street registration on it!
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...6/CAM00485.jpg
1990 Kawasaki KDX200!
it needs the front brakes bled, a kickstand (any mid 90's WR kickstand will also fit), and some adaptation of street legal parts (headlight/taillight/signals, etc.)...but since I will only be using the "street" part of it off-road on the fire roads of the Cleveland National Forest, I'm considering to just re-add the stock headlight (no high beam), the stock taillight, and some turn signals I have kicking around for appearances. OEM stator is only ~40W of A/C power anyways...
Re: street legal 2-strokes
I don't have any kickstands FYI. My WReck came with a YZ swinger so...
Re: street legal 2-strokes
no problem....I saw one on fleabay for $65 shipped...and setup an ebay search for any 93-96 WR250 kickstand
my head already exploding with ideas :suicide:
do I go full street legal parts (baja designs or tusk)? or just build a budget "faux" dual sport kit?
currently supermoto-less, so might consider "sportsman" setup with distanzia
http://www.bits4motorbikes.co.uk/Tyr..._distanzia.jpg
from what I've read, having 17's is the balls, but be prepared to drop a G...and honestly it's not *that* much better than sportsman setup
2 sets of rims with kenda challengers?
http://images.motorcycle-superstore....re----mcss.jpg
but I hate swapping rims
and I have seen many good looking euro styled graphics...just gotta find 'em!
http://git.me/photo/2014/06/08/16655...X200-GREEN.jpg
so many ideas...so much to do...plenty of time to do it!
going to register it non-op for now until I get all my plans laid out...
Re: street legal 2-strokes
Re: street legal 2-strokes
mind blown!
the oem stator is only ~40 watts...might need this...and a coil looks pretty easy to install

I never tried a sportsman. But the dynamics are night and day vs a 21/18 setup.
I got mine done for a few bux less than $1k.. but yeah. After wheels, brakes, caliper brackets, tires.. yeah.. basically.
Re: street legal 2-strokes
I don't want to know what I'm missing...ignorance is bliss
I really enjoyed taking the DR200 through the canyons with its short wheelbase and easy turn-in from the narrow (80 width) tires
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...211_114639.jpg
I think the KDX will be more fun!
I really want to take it to the snake too...so if I bin it in front of rnickymouse, I can just pick it up and keep going, touting the dirtbike's durability
Re: street legal 2-strokes
took it down the street today to make sure she runs...and wow...what a hoot!
it definitely has a smoother power band without much of a hit, like you find on the MX 2-smokers
but what also baffled me, is that even with the FMF pipe, this thing was super quiet...can't imagine what a stock pipe would be like with a DB snorkel!
Re: street legal 2-strokes
It would be silent in that configuration.
Re: street legal 2-strokes
Certainly not a machine you could take on an mx track and rocket over a double/triple. That smooth power is what people like in the woods.
I can understand people wanting crack-pipe money for a plated bike in CA since they won't register dirtbikes anymore. You can't even do the Vermont registration...... sucka ;)
Re: street legal 2-strokes
yupp...just going to separate the duties...YZ250 for MX/desert, KDX200 for trails/road!
but ya...I paid upper teens to pick her up...normally a 1990 KDX200 would be ~$700-$900...so I essentially paid a grand for a street plate
the good part is that they're only getting harder and harder to find, so if I ever sell her, I can get all my money back (and maybe make a profit)
And you do pay a lot to plate a bike out here, but you can't beat the riding...it's the f'n tits. I'm playing around with the idea of buying multi family homes and paying it down asap, renting a room in my side too and using all that income for me to be a surfing/dirt bike bum.

What did you say earlier about being high, on supply? ;)
Re: street legal 2-strokes
Not that much profit!
But every bike I've seen for $2,500 has sold
Can't find any for less than that...
Re: street legal 2-strokes
oh no...
the spending begins:
http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/mcy/4523637916.html
http://images.craigslist.org/00Y0Y_e...53_600x450.jpg
-front/rear rims (reportedly straight)
-kickstand
--------------------
$100
a kenda challenger in a 90/100-21 front ($70) and 100/90-18 rear ($75) + $20 off-bike mounting...and bingo bamo...I'm kart track/canyon ready for $265
although...I'm reading that woods gearing sucks on the road...going to find the most extreme (short and tall) gearing I can do with only using 1 chain
ha, I'm enjoying the planning and building of the bike just as much as the riding...what am I smoking? 2 smoke!
Re: street legal 2-strokes
I need to start thinking about a headlight...
want:
-make bike to look newer
-35W low beam (for now) with bulb/wiring for high beam
-space for a numbers to blend an "MX/racing" look into it
I sort of like this one:
http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...hkZYsUdBNyGIPl
can't find that exact model...so was thinking of this hong kong model instead:
http://thumbs4.ebaystatic.com/d/l225...lw2BlQHyXQ.jpg
I'd get it in green of course
$31.50 shipped on fleabay
Re: street legal 2-strokes
do you want a YZF front MX plate with stacked dual beam? I have one in the attic that I was going to use for my SXV and never did.
Re: street legal 2-strokes
maybe!
pics?
this time around on my bike, the specific "look" will be incorporated into each penny I spend...so if it don't look right, won't work.
Re: street legal 2-strokes
clinton - pics??
I want to buy within the week
otherwise - awwww yeahh....
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...21d5790475.jpg
one hundo
shot the shit with the dude. Turns out he's 15 mins from the woods, and 30 mins from Barstow. We gonna do a kdx run through the woods, then do a desert run
saw this near a staging area:
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...1ce9eb4554.jpg
f-that
I'm outta here!
KDX200 - maxed out on MX
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhGSZxCVtJc
full whip @ 2:37
sketchy goon riding...but that's way more than I could ever do!
maybe I don't need the YZ250 afterall...I can just be slow on a slow bike like the KDX, rather than slow on fast bike.
Re: street legal 2-strokes
Clinton - pics of headlight??
I'm dying to get this thing on the road!
Re: street legal 2-strokes
you gotta be f'n kidding me...
right after I buy that KDX, this bike is for sale AGAIN!

plated 1994 YZ250
I talked to him already a few months ago...for $1,800 it comes with a desert tank and extra set of rims...light are already on there...do I need two plated smokers?!?
Re: street legal 2-strokes
Dude, you're out of control. Stop browsing Craig's and go ride that KDX!!!
Re: street legal 2-strokes
I'd love to have a set of wheels from that YZ... Hell, the frame is straighter than mine, just swap my motor, carb and pipe plus new plastics I've got...
