Re: street legal 2-strokes
$62 ebay forks are from a different year bike...mmm...dunno if I want to take the risk on another set of aluminum cast threads...I like the idea of reinforced threads from a heli-coil
so I got a tip from a friend - I'm going to call the local moto-specific suspension shops (race-tech, RG3, etc.) to see if they have experience with stripped axle threads - maybe they will have a recommendation on insert (heli-coil vs. solid insert) with a part in stock and some know-how on lining up the fork leg to drill it!
Re: street legal 2-strokes
so yeah!
who has a grenade we can throw at this 2002 YZ426F?
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...229_135558.jpg
fired maybe 3 times...I couldn't recreate the steps quite well enough to figure it out...
either way...got to spend some time on it today...
old tank was leaking:

got a replacement from fleabay for $80 shipped...score!

going to keep the old petcock:

the old gas tank screw heads had been broken off...with the stud still stuck in the frame...

I wanted to save the threads in the frame for new bolts, so I did my best to unscrew it with a set of vice-grips...

luckily she came out...

new tank went on with no issues

I followed the instructions online (decompression lever in, kick it over 3 times, choke on, kick 1/2 down, let go of decompression lever and kickstarter, kick through) and got it to fire 3 times...but couldn't for the live of me figure out how I did that...most of the time the kicker would get stuck halfway...other times it went through without even firing
I'll bring it to my friend in advance (who will be riding it)...but if it doesn't work out, I might just bring him a 2-stroke...after I spent 1/2 an hour trying to start it, I'm guessing the engine flooded, because when it backfired, it sounded like a pistol!!
Re: street legal 2-strokes
I need to teach you how to fire a four stroke, without the decompressor... :D
Re: street legal 2-strokes
it's not possible...I'm pretty sure the 426 was created to drive dirt bikes away from the sport through frustration
I'm also going to edit my thread title - "breakdirt916's broken dirt bike adventures" - all my shiet, one thread.
Re: street legal 2-strokes
KTM makes a fix for all that noise.
Re: street legal 2-strokes
thought money was the fix?
I know...sell all the bikes, buy a plated smoker 200...the fame and women follow
the 426 just came thorugh my hands as a "free" bike...if I can, or can't start it, it gets sold or parted...then moving onto the next project...I'm just single and optimistic about how much time I have to work on bikes
I like to dream...the next crazy/stupid idea is to do LA-Barstow to Vegas on the KDX200!
Re: street legal 2-strokes
What's the target price on the 426 out of curiosity?
Re: street legal 2-strokes
I expect the worst, hope for the best - ideally $1000-$1,200...but realistically $800?

Joke 1: damn, you don't even own one yet and you already drank all the (Pumpkin Flavored™) Kool-Aid? :D
Joke 2: even if it was orange, and it lived in this thread, i still don't think it would run. :D

Re: street legal 2-strokes
I have a mint OEM front and rear fender off 04 WR450F for sale......
Re: street legal 2-strokes
:spit:
no thank you
edit: 55/160 jets ordered for the XR650L + sprocket bolts for the yz...although taking the carb off the 650L seemed ridiculous - wtf are all those random hoses and cables for?? seemed very, very excessive
Re: street legal 2-strokes
I've blown up on e motard. maybe I can give this on a try..it went somethgin like this :bananna::scream::scratchhead::sad2:
Re: street legal 2-strokes
There is a solid knack to kicking a 426 over. I got pretty good at starting them when I had mine. EXCEPT when it was HOT. Sometimes it was a bear. You do need the decomp lever, you also need to kick it through a few times to prime it and DO NOT give it gas. Get your hand OFF the throttle. I put mine on the cross bar on the handle bar.
Re: street legal 2-strokes
Ha, so different from the smoker game...no gas whatsoever
I caved on a pair of forks for the 94's stripped out situation...seller is in the cali desert, and my friend and I want to ride Calico ghost town anyways...so I will pickup the forks from the shop, then go for a desert ride through the gold mines...
Seriously...sort of wish you guys were out here to check this stuff out...sometime in your lifetime, make the trip and I will have a working bike for you
Re: street legal 2-strokes
wow...so I've carried an RM125 on a corolla, an RM125 in a minivan, an FZR600 in a minivan, and 3 dirtbikes in an F-150...
and I thought that was a bit much...guess not!

Re: street legal 2-strokes
Re: street legal 2-strokes
With the right bike, a trials tire and an auto clutch you could get up just about any of that.
Re: street legal 2-strokes
I did a bit of paddle walking
to be honest, it wasn't bad...stand up, lean back, WOT blip to get the front wheel over, and the rear will roll over if you have enough momentum...sort of like a trials/endurocross technique
I would've hated using a MX 125 2-stroke...the 250 bottom end really helped out...a 300exc or xc-w would've been even better!
although I am dying to know how the '90 KDX would've done...but nowadays, I just decide that some things, I'd rather not go up it...

Re: street legal 2-strokes
The KDX would have loved that stuff. I'd rock it on my '87 KDX
Re: street legal 2-strokes
Re: street legal 2-strokes
Damn dude. Always ripping. Good stuff. I'm still a track rat (hitting Milestone today 1/6). One day I will have a trail bike.
Re: street legal 2-strokes
yeah bro...I loooooooooooove ridin' dirt...
why do you need a trail bike?
we were both riding a stock MX bikes - '00 yz250 and an '03 yz450f...both stock suspension valving w' no engine porting/fly wheel weights
I'm prob. going to hit up Ocotillo on the 16th and 17th if ya want to rip it back in your day and do some classic off-roading
Re: street legal 2-strokes
huh...so I called 1 mechanic and race tech suspension, and everyone recommends just replacing the fork bottom instead of putting in an heli-coil or threaded insert!
oh well...fleabay forks are going on!
Re: street legal 2-strokes
They're assuming you can BUY the fork bottom still I bet. For my 92, no such luck. For your 2000, $250 new OEM.
